2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Power Steering Cavitation?

A couple days ago as I was turning a corner from a stop sign my steering wheel shimmied hard through the turn. I check my power steering fluid and it was low. I filled it up but the symptoms are still there, just not as severe. It is fine driving straight or making turns to follow the road, its the 90 degree turns that it still shimmys. Ive turned steering wheel all the way left and right several times to purge the air. Not sure the pump is cavitating but thats what I suspect. Does anybody have any ideas?

How low was it? How much fluid did you have to add?



Maybe it is not a problem with the pump or gearbox, but something else. I would check the u joints on the front axle shafts. If they are toast they can cause some funny vibrations while turning (most time they will squeak when bad, but not all the time, also the squeak is hard to hear over the Cummins).

Aha!

Check your steering stabilizer to make sure it is not bent. Same symptoms, sometimes.

I have had some similar experiences on my 94. Each time I have had these problems I put on a new steering box and the problem was solved. The steering boxes are not very good. I am on my 5th. one now. I don't seem to be able to source a good box. My last three have been from my local Napa store because the owner is a good guy and at least replaces the box. I would like some replies if anyone has a solution to this.
