I want to change my power steering fluid over to a synthetic. ( want to get rid of that cold weather whine) Does anyone know the best way to drain all fluid from pump steering gear and hydroboost unit? Thanks

Andy

Andy, the simplist way is to buy a turkey baster, get all you can out and refill with synthetic, drive truck and repeat 2 more times and you will be all done.

I did it per the book and it was a PITA, from here on out its baster time for me.

cheers, Kevin

Valvoline SynPower Power Steering Fluid, about $7/qt from most any autoparts. One quart will get you three changes.

turkey baster

If you can't sneak the turkey baster out of the house (kids snitch on you). Try a syringe, I use the bigger ones that we use to doctor the cattle with (30cc). Hey you know you are a red neck when you use a cattle syringe to baste a turkey . :D

Hi Kids,

I made a vacuum rig to change mine. Hooked up the shop vac hose nice and tight with duct tape to the top of a sturdy plastic jug. I used a 1 litre cranberry juice bottle - won't implode from the suction.

Cut a small slit about halfway down the jug and inserted a length of vacuum line I had laying around - real small inside diameter. Taped the crap out of this so no vacuum leaks.

Other end of the vacuum hose into resevoir and turn the vacuum on. Fished the hose around and down deep and got a ton of old fluid out. Took a while but worked well.

I, too, did 3 changes with synthetic fluid. No more groaning when its real cold out like last night: Something like 12 degrees or so.

Hope this helps.

Steve
