Power steering system makes a lot of noise when it it cold - - I understand there is a filter screen and a ball check valve some where in the system - - can anyone tell me where these two are and how to clean, swap, or replace them.

Thanks,

Denny

The screen and check ball are behind the hex nut that the high pressure hose connects into on the back of the pump.

what fluid ?

Seems like everyone has changed to Synthetic PS , but what kind ??

Amsoil doesnt even list a PS fluid but RP does.

I just went thru the same thing on my truck, I read somewhere about using Lube-Gard power steering additive. It can be found at NAPA. I think it's a 4 or 6 oz. bottle and all I did was use a turkey baster to suck out the old PS fluid and then poured in the new stuff. After it cycled thru the system I have yet to hear the growl again and it's bee pretty cold around here lately.

I was hesitant to try it but it worked out really well for me. It was about $7-8 for that little bottle.

I tried the fluid change, and it worked until it got really cold. Then I had no assist at all, even when it warmed up.

Follow these links for the screen fix. I also stretched the spring a little. My steering is better than ever. It was always a little coarse, but it was nice and smooth today. We'll see how it is once the temp drops again though.
