Just installed a new power steering gear box from napa and now it seems to be working pretty well except it is much harder to turn the wheel left than it is right. Not sure why this would be. The old box was going out but did not have this issue. I will be installing a DSS hopefully next week but i dobt this will change that. I am hoping to clean that small filter in the pump this weekend but i can't see how that would change just one direction of turn and not the other.

Let me know if i should just pull it and return or if you all have seen this before.

Thanks

CH

Try this - lift the whole front end off the ground, stands under the suspension and start the truck up letting it idle. See if the wheel turns by it self opposit the way it's harder to steer to. If it does there may be too much assist pressure going to one side vs the other, then I'd call NAPA and see what they say about getting you another unit.

Boxes

I went through 3 boxes before I gave up and went to a specialty shop here in So Cal. and they rebuilt mine.

Remember

8800 GVW is the 4 turn box.

7500 GVW is the 3 turn box.

Strangely mine is about 3. 75 turns?

About a year ago I replaced my leaky steering box with a NAPA unit. It did the exact same thing as yours, power steering in only one direction. I put 6 more boxes on it before I got a good one. Yes... you read it right... . 6 boxes. The problems ranged from no assist at all, to a bent pitman shaft. My buddy owns the local NAPA or I wouldn't have kept trying, plus all the quality box builders had long turn-around times.

Try another box.

Hey Bob,

So these folks that are installing a 3 turn on their 8800 GVW trucks, should they anticipate premature failures? How about if they have the DSS Stabilizer too?

Wear and tear?

I'm probably not the best one to answer your question Joe.

I have 300,000 miles on the clock and this is my 3rd box.

The DSS is great!

I think they put the 4 turn on the higher GVW trucks to allow them to turn easier when loaded to the max GVW.

The DSS helped my last box last more than 200,000 miles!!

And that included alot of Baja's "BEST" roads!
