power steering locked up and brake pedal got hard HELP

Was sitting in the driveway when the truck partially turned left all the sudden a loud squeeling sound. The brake pedal got hard as a rock and will barely stop the truck and the steering is locked in the left position. Any suggestion of what it could be would be great. Is there a fuse that I can't seem to find or did my pump go out HELP, we leave on a 2 week trip on Tuesday... ... . :(

Sounds like your PS pump died(locked up) and the vacuum pump, which is turned by the ps pump shaft, cannot turn. You therefore have no brake vacuum, and the squeel was the locked pump trying to stop the drive belt.

That happened to me after changing the power steering fluid and replaceing with synthetic, I just ran the eng. and kept trying to turn the steering, finally started working again. Did you check the fluid level?

towed away

Oh well there go's my truck to the dealer on a flat bed again, just got it back from them 2 days ago for the steering work they did and the axle seal they screwed up while doing the ball joints. Finally got it to steer straight and now it won't steer at all. It does sound like my PS pump thanks for the quick replies. What sucks is we are leaving on a road trip to OR. and NV on Tuesday hopes it is done by then... ... ... :(

Oh and by the way the fluid was good the dealer just serviced it while in this past week..... Oh I hope they did'nt put the wrong fluid in the PS pump... ... ... .

just a quick note. a friend of mine had the same thing happen and it turned out to be the check ball in the power steering box. we turned the engine off and turned the wheel all the way back and forth. then started it and it worked ok. but this may or may not work for you because it all depends on if the check ball will free up. in our case it did.

good luck

What is the power boost pump, dealer says thats what is out

My dealer says it is my power boost pump that controls my steering and brakes that is broken. What is that I know of a power steering pump. The mech. said it boost the power for the steer and brakes... Any suggestions to what this is would be appreciated. This is in regards to my post last night about my steering going out and my brakes pedal getting hard. Thanks... ..... :(

I think they actually call it a hydroboost pump. It is basicaly a fancy power steering pump that provides the power assist for the brakes, instead of a vacuum pump providing the power assist for the brakes. One pump, two jobs to do.

cont:dealer replaced hydroboost pump still no steering

This is a continuation of my last couple post concerning my steering pump. They said it was my hydroboost pump that went out, they replaced it but still no pressure. So now they are gonna replace my power steering pump. I wonder why they just did'nt replace both to begin with, Does it sound like they know what they are doing. Does anyone have any other idea's what this could be, they said it is not the check ball that someone in my previous post mentioned. Any one else have these problems at 17,000 miles truck should'nt even be broken in yet... ... ... HELP I want to go on vacation...

shoot who knows what they did this time

Hi ftb I'm not sure what's going on, starting to think my truck is a lemon. When I got it back for the ball joints and allignment they damage the axle seal, and put a dent in the tailgate, so I took it back for that Monday. Got it back and 2 days later this crap happens with the power steering and brakes. Makes me wonder if it is the truck or that stupid dealer. By the way I had it towed to a different dealer, not taking it back to the original ever again. What sucks is we are suppose to leave Tuesday for out vacation...

Sorry to hear about that. You might want to e-mail Brent (fozzie bear). He might be able to help you out. He help me with my truck.

you might want to e-mail him. He is a wealth of knowledge. -- email address removed -- (i think).

Good luck... . I'll be on the road also next week. Denver to Tulsa.

check brake master cylinder accumulator

Mine had a similar condition - check my post on Loss of P/S fluid.

I *think* mine may be the the accumulator bottle on the brake master cylinder. As I understand it, this small cylinder has an air chamber and a hydraulic fluid chamber. If the engine/pump stops running, the stored pressurized hydraulic fluid can be used for a couple of stops. (The hydroboost pump and power steering pump are the same part - check the pressure line running to the brake master cylinder then to the steering gear. ) In my case, the bladder separating the chambers may have burst, allowing some air into the line. The fluid then overflowed the cap because of the extra volume. I got it going again by running the engine at 2000 RPM and turning the wheel lock to lock until the air was worked out of the system. I haven't tested it yet, but I suspect that there will be no brake assist after the engine is shut off. Maybe one of the experts here can confirm this.

I hope you get it fixed in time for vacation.

I doubt ....

that your truck is a lemon, but it sounds like your choice of dealers for service needs some help! Find a new one , and check them out before you give them your truck!

dealer pics

Unfortunately ol ron I only have 2 choices close by unless I go to LA and besides towing covered by my warranty will only tow to the closest dealer. A simple fix such as a power steering pump should be able to be performed easily at any dealer, I could of done it myself if it was'nt under warranty. It has taken 3 days to perform this task so far. It appears to me that warranty work takes second seat to a paying customer, that has been pretty clear to me since I have owned this truck. .

You are right when you say paying customers come first, maybe not all dealers but most for the simple reason they make more money than on warranty work, they don't seem to care that by treating you this way that you may never buy from them again, I do not understand their reasoning.
