2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Power Steering Pump Failure?

Guys i think my power steering pump is shot. It is leeking ps oil. Anybody else have this problem, my truck has 66,000 on it and it is a 2000 3/4 ton. How hard is it to change it and do you guys know if it is covered under the 100,000 mile warranty? Any feedback would be great.

Need more info... . where is it leaking from and other then the leak, does the PS work fine.

Mine started that last summer, the part from the dealer was $1043. 00 that was before labor to change it out. There was a member on TDR that sold a kit to rebuild the unit, sorry I do not have his name of Email address. Jack

Try doing a search on vacuum pump seal - you should find plenty of information.



You need to determine if it is power steering fluid or oil that is leaking. There is an external oil line going to the vacuum pump and there is a oil seal between the vacuum pump and the power steering pump that is notorious for leaking. There are no Dodge or Cummins service parts for either pump but the seal is a standard part that can be purchased at an automotive supply house or a power transmission supply house.



But I would try to get it fixed under warranty - some have reported that the dealer covered it under warranty.

Chipstein, I checked engine oil it seemed fine, and then checked ps fluid and that was low. I assumed it is the pump but will look further into it, like some say it could be the vacuum pump seal, anything i should look at specific to see if i can narrow it down?

The whole left side of the trucks undercarriage is covered in ps fluid or oil.

Thanks for the information on the seal size and sourcing. I was just about to embark on a seal hunting expedition, you've saved me much grief.



I've been dripping oil all over the county for about 2 weeks now at 103k. Left side of engine and all components below are well oiled at this moment... .

Thanks guys, upon further investigation it looks like that it is the vacuum seal leaking. Oil seems to be dripping out where the vacuum pump connects to the power steering pump. hope this is the problem, guess i will find out. How long does it take for those who have don it already?

If it's PS fluid leaking out of the joint between the Vacuum pump and the PS pump, then it's under two hours. If it's engine oil, and you have to pull the vacuum pump and change the seal, add an hour.



One note though, make sure that you can unscrew all of the fittings. Break them loose and make sure that they turn on the tubing before getting into it too deep. I broke the oil supply line goinjg to the vacuum pump and it took three days to get a replacement.



Oh yeah, make sure you have a good step to stand on!!

Just bought a PS pump for my 96 at NAPA for under $100. Dodge and Cummins were many times more. Got new hoses from NAPA as well pretty reasonable I though.



i am planning to do it in a few weeks if the damn, I mean seal, doesn't break before that.



Good advice on the spare parts. I have already ordered them from cummins. Spare oil supply line, the adaptor between the oil supply line and the pump, a couple of gaskets, several o-rings, a couple of seals, two new power steering lines, and an extra bolt and nut or two. The oil line was about 28 bucks. The spare parts were a lot less than an hour of shop time at the dealer.



I know I will have trouble with the oil line so I bought a 15mm crowfoot wrench to take the line off at the T-fitting on the side of the block instead of the vacuum pump. You will also need an 18mm flarenut wrench for the PS lines.

Can anyone tell me if the instructions in the attached link work on the ISB's as well? Also, is there a shaft seal for both the ps pump and vacuum pump?
