I just finished replacing the steering gear and was bleeding the system when ps pump made a loud wining noise and then the steering got real stiff. I removed the ps pump without removIng the vacuum pump will I be able to realign the new ps pump or should I just remove the vacuum pump and reinstall them together. Also is the ps pump rebuildable and if so where can I get a rebuild kit.

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Air in the system will make the pump whine pretty loud. How did you go about bleeding it?

Also it is easier to remove the vac pump with the steering pump attached and service it as one unit. Do your self a favor and pull the vac pump apart and replace the seal between the vac pump and steering pump as well. The kit is only $7 or 8 from Cummins and it's very easy to do.

As for a rebuild kit, I suggest just getting a rebuilt pump from Napa. It was about $100. The rebuild kit was around $35... I didn't want to mess with it.

same exact thing happened a while back to me and when i pulled mine off the two ears that it mounts to the vacuum pump on were broken so glad to hear that didnt happen you, new vacuum pumps are expensive! i second the rebuilding the vacuum pump and just buying a rebuilt ps pump from auto zone they had the cheapest from what i remember, them and csk (checker shucks cragen) beat competitors prices. but what i like is it has a lifetime warrantee.

To bleed the system I just turned the wheel right to left but it would not go all the way to the stops. After I get a new ps pump installed it will problly be easier to bleed with the front wheels off the ground

I got the new ps pump on with out pulling the vacuum pump . I got the vac pump seal kit a day too late but will rebuild it later . Every thing works good and no leaks. thanks for all your help.
