Power steering pump replacement

Just noticed that my PS pump is leaking and there is play in the shaft. I plan on replacing the pump asap. Truck has 63K, seems kind of soon to be bad.



Are there any tips or tricks when changing the pump or is it a pretty straightforward job?



I have the service manual and it says to remove a bunch of intake stuff. Do you really have to do all that to get the pump out?

do a search. i am not well versed on the details,but there have been several updates on the pump and some availability issues. it is also faily pricey. i know there was an article in the last tdr mag too.

I did a search before I asked my question but you did point me in a new direction. I found the article in the TDR Magazine, issue 73, page 92.



Thanks for that, I never noticed the article when I read the magazine earlier. Just what I was looking for!

I replaced mine and I don't think I had to remove anything but disconnect the hoses and pull the pulley off after it was out. Unfortunately my reconditioned pump started leaking after about 6 months. Haven't change it again yet as the leak is minor and helps make a cheap rustproofing.

Update

Why do things always break just before a planned trip?



As I said in my original post, my PS pump was leaking. The leak was getting worse and even though I live in a large metro area, nobody had the less expensive older pump with the pulley and reservoir already installed as shown in TDR issue 73. I didn't want to go with an aftermarket rebuilt either.



I did find one at a dealer in Ohio but I'm leaving on a two week hunting trip tomorrow and the shipping logistics didn't work out.



Long story short, I got the new upgraded (high price) pump that's used on the newer trucks. I also had to buy a new mounting bracket and reservoir to go with it. Being in a big hurry and not sure about getting the new bracket aligned properly and also not sure about mounting the pulley, I just bit the bullet and let my dealer do the whole job. It took the tech about 3 hours while I waited.



It works fine. My BrakeSmart shows brake PSI when you step on the brakes. The PSI is higher now with less brake pedal pressure. The steering also feels lighter. Either this new style pump has higher pressure or my old one was weak.

Here is a link to a good thread for you to read. I wouldn't waste your time with an aftermarket "rebuilt" pump. it will cost you more in the long run. reach into your pocket and pay for the chrysler pump. That was my lesson. Maybe somebody can teach us both a better option.

Sounds ridiculous! If the only problem is the pump, then a good rebuilt one should be fine. The trick is finding a good one! Hydraulic pumps have been around for a hundred years and I can't see where there is anything exotic about the ones on CTDs.

How about replacing the pump with one of the Borgesons? Scuttlebutt I have heard is that they are very good and come with a 3 year warranty vesrus a 1 year for a rebuilt.
