I took the screen out of the power steering pump to clean it and followed the instructions from a post on this site. I double checked everything and put it back together. Well as luck would have it my steering is worse I have to rev the engine to get it to turn I did bleed the system. Any other tips would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm going to install a new steering box tomorrow so I've done alot of reading on this and hope it goes well for me (not normally the case) but I would say for you that what I learned from research is to do the bleeding routine again and again... and well be patient between each step. Getting the air out takes some time... it may even take driving it at less than perfect conditions to get results. I plan to jack up the front axle and saw the steering wheel back and forth multiple times before starting the motor... maybe as many as 20... and keep the pump supplied with fluid at all times... then when it doesn't work for me either I'll post right behind your thread for some answers. Just kidding... Hope you get it fixed.

I'm also wondering if it's benefical to crack the high pressure line going into the steering box after the dry runs, during the first startup step, and let the fluid purge out slightly much like you do when bleeding the fuel lines to the injectors after a fuel filter replacement to purge air. Then when a solid flow of ps fluid is coming out, snug the pressure line down when the engine is still running. It would definitely be a messy job, especially laying under the truck but I can't see why that wouldn't work. I've never read a post on this site that mentioned that way of doing things. As long as you have a way of making sure the pump NEVER runs dry. Maybe a last resort type of desperation move. I purposely didn't take a shower today b/c I know I'll need one tomorrow. Another attempt at humor... I have a feeling I may not be in the same mood tomorrow.

I bled my ps system after a vacuum/ps pump replace and PSC 3 turn box upgrade and did it similar to what others on this site have already posted. Jacked up front end, turn st wheel L R 20 times engine off, more fluid, turn wheel again 20 times, check fluid level, let sit for 15 min, turn wheel 5-6 more times then start engine. Run a few minutes, shut off and check level, start again and turn wheel to feel and hear. Shut down and go for a drive if no leaks (and remove jacks-duh). Went great for me... with inline filter it took about 36-38oz of fluid. The pump priming at least 20 times without running and then letting it sit for awhile before starting, I think is the key. It helps to have advantage of all new/clean stuff. It is working better than new. Very happy esp with the 3 turn box. Different truck altogether.

Glad to hear it went well for you. I had to break down and buy a new pump the old one must of been on its last leg because the new one works good.
 
just installed an AGR High Output pump and love it, makes a world of difference... finally works the way it should. never bled it either fyi, works great.
 
same thing happened to me with those reman cardone pumps, so i said screw it im spending the cash, now im :D



As is the case with reman stuff it can vary widely. I did a Cardone reman pump thru rockauto.com and after three days and much driving I couldn't be happier. In hindsight I might have gone for a hi output pump from PSC or other suppliers but I spent alot on steering box, shaft, etc so my budget was at it's limit. Getting it installed and bled properly from the start, I think, is a must. I followed the service manual and advice on this site about how to do procedure to the letter and had no problems. I wish you the best in getting it fixed.
