Ok have to replace the power steering pump on my 97, i took it off ok and left the vacum pump on the truck. Do you need to pull the vacum pump to put the new steering pump on or can you do it with the vacum pumo on the truck? I am having a hard time getting the steering pump to mate up with the vacum pump. I am getting it lined up but it is not wanting to go all the way in and mount flush against the vacum pump. Tell me what i am doing wrong. Thanks.

The two drive cogs have to mate up exactly with the recesses in the out drive of the vac pump. Pretty hard to do since the vac pump is geared to the engine. Removing the vac pump at this stage would be really easy, and a good time to replace the vac pump seal. It is Cummins PN 4089742. Comes with the vac pump to gear case gasket, O-rings, drive seal, and instructions. Costs less than $10. Hook them together and reinstall as a unit. Removing the tube to the intake manifold makes the job a lot easier.

On edit. If you decide to replace the seal, pay attention to the way the seal is installed in the vac pump before you drive it out. The only flaw in the instructions is a good picture or description of how the new seal goes back in.
