I'm trying to buy a power steering pump and the auto parts store has two options. One has an internal filter and the other doesn't. The one with the filter is a little cheaper which doesn't make sense to me. Does anyone know if it matters one way or the other? I have a 1997 ram 2500 12v ctd. Any input would be helpful.

I went thru about 5 rebuilds from various parts houses before I finally got smart and bought a new OEM from mopar4less. A few more dollars, but it will last as long as 3 to 5 rebuilds.

I would be leery of a parts store steering pump. However, past experience says that they have a screen that goes on the return line. I would stay away from an internal filter because how would you change it? Also, if you can be a week without your truck, send your pump to PSC and have it built. It's much cheaper than just buying one outright. That's what I did and it was one of the best mods I've done.

PSC finally has a redesign for their Cummins power steering pumps that is worth getting. I had one of their previous pumps that lasted only a couple months. Their new unit is my first that has had no problems in several months. Use GM Cold Weather Power Steering Fluid in it, it is the best and though very expensive, it is worth the investment. Lower RPM steering is improved and the pump is quieter as well.
