I'm considering the purchase of a Magnefine filter for my power steering unit. The filters come in three sizes: 1/2, 3/8 and 5/16. What is the size of the return line on our pump? I checked the service manual and did not find it. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place.

Cummins Power, don't leave home without it

Both the steering gear and hydraulic brake booster OEM return line hoses are 11/32 ID. The text on the hoses say "POWER STEERING RETURN - 11/32 IN. F61-494 30114-R 0759".

I'm replacing both of mine but I'm having trouble finding replacement hose of this size, even from the Dodge parts department. Both Dodge and NAPA told me to use 3/8 line instead. Seems to me, 3/8 may be better because I had to slit both OEM hoses at the pump and couplers to get them off. It was like they were welded on. I checked the new 3/8 hose with the gear box coupler and it seems to fit good and tight.

NAPA suggested their high pressure multipurpose line that has a burst strength of somewhere around 400 PSI. Dodge suggested using their 3/8 power steering return line hose.

I was wondering what other members have used or done to replace the hoses.

I used 3/8 NAPA auto transmission cooler line. The line with the wound nylon jacket, not the soft fuel line looking stuff. No problems with it. I would suggest the 3/8" filter. Let me know how it works out.

I finally found the correct hose (except it's 3/8 ID instead of 11/32 ID) at the local parts store - SP Automotive. It's Goodyear SAE J189, which specifically conforms to the standards for low pressure power steering return hose. I got 4 feet for $5. 89. I didn't get the in-line filter. I plan to make power steering flush and fluid changes a regular part of my truck's maintenance.
