My 91 W250 has toasted another power steering pump. This time the seal let aproximatly two quarts of ps fluid into the crankcase. It seems that no oil is getting up to these gears( not sure how it does ?) . I ran the engine without pump installed to check and noticed a noise from the injector pump.

Any ideas whats going on Thanks in advance im new here, Jim

There is an engine lube oil (stainless flex) line behind the vacuum pump. It suplies the pump gear assy with lube oil. The power steering pump is lubed with it's own system oil. There is a seal on the coupling (inside the ps pump drive) that seals the ps oil from the vacuum pump lube oil.

If you blew the oil seal out it's a pump related problem with in it'self and not an external lube problem. Likely the ps pump itself.

I have replaced the ps pump due to failure and kinda know what's inside there. Though I can't say what your exact problem is.

I don't understand what vacuum pump the truck has... ... ... ...

Is it the old style or the later style? The late models have the newer style pump which is much different from the early model... ... pump. Can somebody help me out here.

If it is an early model pump, the vac pump is lubed by engine oil directly from the gear housing. The power steering pump can leak and puke oil into the crankcase from there. It can do that in either model, actually.

Do you still have vacuum for brake assist? If not, it is possible that the bearing and lobe assembly has gone out, essentially killing the vacuum pump. It is expensive to fix, BTDT.

You CAN replace the older pump with the newer vane type pump. There is a pipe thread plug in the side of the block where you install the supply line to the newer pump. I had mine made at the local CaseIH shop for around $15-18 (I dont remember exactly- I have other useless info to remember). Drawback is, you have to replace the vac and p/s pump together, as they are not interchangeable from generation to generation.

I recently addressed the very first style steering/vac pump issue myself, the twin diaphram canister style. I talked to Pete Gould who sells seal kits for the later oil fed style pumps and he left me with the impression that the steering pump would swap over, no problems, you would have to get the oil supply hose and fitting though. I could be wrong and would check if you plan to convert to the newer style. Pete would have more info on this, http://www.fixinrams.com/index.html
