Power steering ?

Truck... . 1990 non intercooled.



Problem: Power steering fluid running out of cap after shutdown.



It was filled to the proper level with proper fluid. Initially, we didn't have power steering, but now do... . but it overflows out the cap after shutdown. Any ideas ? TIA

Sounds like you may have air in the system. Anyway, jack up at least one front wheel (2 is preferred, but one will take a lot of load off the steering components) and turn the wheel side to side, stop to stop, and see if the fluid level drops. When/if it does, add fluid immdiately, or as soon as it practical.



That, or you may have a screen or valve blocked. There are others more knowledgeable than I in this field. This should be a starting point.

My '92 did this when it was new. (my cousin owned it) Every time he drove it it would puke oil. I put a piece of radiator hose on it to extend the top. When I got the truck 4 yrs ago it was still on there. I replaced it with a piece of hydraulic suction hose with a pipe fitting for a cap, it looks nicer. Why it did it I don't know, but dodge wanted $800 for a kit to fix it.

Found out, probably air in the system. Jacked up the front end, turned wheels to the left, but not too the stop, just a little from it. Checked level, was down, added some to the proper level. Started up truck with cap on, turned 4-5 times all the way left and right, let run for a few minutes.



Shut off truck, rechecked level, was ok, let down from jack. Now have power steering and its not (so far) overflowing out the cap after shutdown. It also isn't foaming like it was before. I suppose it was air in the line. Thanks for the help... . again
