I have read many steering problems related to a bad pump, gear box, leaks and fluid related. My truck has over 80 k on it. I change the steering fluid every 10k. It does get dirty and it does get contaminants in it. I use Mopar or STP pump fluid. I have never had a leak or pump problem. To change the fluid, I use a small hand pump and pump out the reservoir. Add fresh fluid, run it till its hot then pump it out again. I do this about three times to ensure a good flush. I hope this advice will help other owners.

PS fluid

I started using Valvoline Syn fluid and I like it. I had several problems caused by ps fluid foaming and blowing out the fill cap. The valvoline has a statement on the bottle (anti foaming) so far so good. I heard that LUbe Engineering also makes a good fluid also saw a post that said some dealers are using atf +4 which I would not do. I like the idea of using syn because it will run cooler and less wear. JMHO LOL

You have to be careful about the viscosity. Some synthetics are too heavy in cold weather for the steering system. You can blow a seal. Thats why I stayed with Mopar or equiv oil recomended for PS pumps only.

Fluid capacity

Good suggestion. Approximately how much fluid does the reservoir hold? I just purchased the Valvoline Syn.

thanks... .
2. 7 pints is the total fluid capacity of the entire steering system. Also do not overfill the reservoir. I don't know how much it holds. Just add little at a time till correct hot or cold reading on the dip stick.

I'll be changing mine to Valvoline Syn as soon as my vac pump gets looked at by stealer tomorrow. Don't know what they'll be replacing. The temp here hasn't hit 20* in I don't know how long. Maybe 30* by Sunday. I don't like the sound of the cold ps pump/fluid.

PS fluid

Val PS syn fluid is rated for chry. PS sys. I read many post stateing it works alot better than dc fluid in cold weather. My problems have happened when using DC fluid.
