Sorry for this question, I did have the guts to register at the dieselstop just to ask this question.

Ok, a guy I work with just bought another powerstroke (he says he needs 4 real doors, but he has no kids, I think it is an excuse not to buy a real truck). His first one went 170,000 miles and only needed 2 trannys, 2 turbos, and some other stuff. Now he bought another, pre superduty. (97-older). it is a 5-speed, with 4. 10s, F-250. It has somewhere around 100K on it, and the motor has already been rebuilt once, and the turbo has been replaced once, and it has a new clutch. Now, when he is pulling a heavy load (heavy to him is 7K) and he lets off the gas, he says it vibrates real bad. He said he thinks it is acting sorta like when his turbo went south on his old one. what do you guys think? What turbos do psd's use in that era? I only know 3 people with power jokes in the 96-97 era and they have all replaced turbos. I think Im gonna put a Cummins sticker on their trucks so maybe they'll have better luck with them!!!!

Thanks,

Jeff

Don't know about the '03+ trucks, but the earlier ones used Garrett turbos. I'm guessing the trucks have been shutdown hot. That could be the reason for the turbos being replaced. VERY hard on the bearings.

I believe they were shut down hot also. I will mention the u-joint/support bearing thing to him. He does have gauges in the new one, and I believe he said it only vibrates after you make a lot of boost and let off the gas (I dont know what he meant by a lot of boost, heck, I dont even know what a lot of boost is for a PSD!)

You might have him check his flywheel, those dual mass POS flywheel's are known to come apart. Even though you say he has a new clutch, the old flywheel might not have been replaced. He needs to crawl under the truck with a BIG screw driver or smaller pry bar and see if he can rotate the inside piece compared to the outside piece. I think it should only move about 5/32 of an inch or so, and I think it's less than that. When the flywheel coughed it's cookies in my ol' 97, it had more than a 1/2" of play and vibrated like crazy, much worse than my 04. 5 Ram. :-laf

Listen to what those '94-'97 guys over at the diesel stop have to say, they will have some good info for you. That's where I was before I bought my Ram.

I agree with the driveline and clutch checks - My dual mass flywheel (DMF) had 5/8" slop and was rattling pretty good.

There is a single mass flywheel replacment available.

Should be a Garrett turbo and I think 10-15# boost is pretty high for a stock PSD.

Hey BV, fun when that DMF spits it's insides out onto the ground Huh? :-laf

Both LUK and Southbend have single mass assemblys. I had a Southbend ConOFE in my '97, good to 450hp.

And that 10-15lb. seems kinda low. I could hit 20lb. s+ hitting it hard. Stock other than being straight pipe'd and Tymar'd.

what the heck is Tymar'd?

Thanks for the response. I bet it is his flywheel. seems to be fairly common.

:-laf about the Tymar. I thought the same thing when I read about the BHAF, Ford lingo Vs. Dodge lingo. It's an open air, air filter. Tymar is the name of the company that sells a bhaf for the Ford PSD's. As I built my own bhaf for my ford, I guess I can't really call it a Tymar. As it seems you have signed up over at the diesel stop, do a search on Tymar, you're buddy might be interested in it.

And yes on that flywheel, much more common than toasting a turbo. Unless you got really stupid, toasting a turbo was not on the top of the list of things that got smoked. Seems more common on the Cummins?

Any way. If you want, you can send me a PM. I'm still more than happy to talk PSD, the one thing I miss about my ol' PSD is the lay'd back attitude amongst the owners of that generation of PSD. It was old enough to have FUN hot rodding it, unlike being scared to do anything with it.
