I'm a fairly new member and share with all of you our unbridled love of our Cummins/Dodges. But, I'm not sure I agree with so many of you that powerstrokes are junk. On a daily basis I drive a 99 f-350 powerstroke e/w 6 speed manual transmission and 4wd for the utility company where I work. This truck currently has 91,000 miles on it and has proven to be an extremely capable and dependable truck. It weighs 13,000 lbs every day and has seen tougher duty than a great many of us will ask of our Dodges. It has drug a backhoe up a rocky desert mountain that the backhoe could not climb on it's own. Due to the fact that it has an aerial lift on it there are untold hours of stationary operation on it and it has towed uo to 26,000 lbs. So far all without any problems besides a chronic parking brake problem. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't trade my Dodge for anything but the competetion is better than we give credit for.

I like the Phords alright. I don't like some of the fuel mileage reports I hear from my buds that drive them. I don't like the little ding in my window from something that fell out from under one (turbo bolt, maybe). They don't seem to have many more problems than we do. Now Duralax, that's a different story.

Sageair,

Welcome aboard. . You will soon learn that most of us are so in love with our trucks... that we lose sleep thinking about the dust settling on it at night. . while its in the garage no less. #ad

Your bound to find the same on the Ford site or Chevy site. Additionally, you must weed through what is fact or opinion.

For example:

It is a fact that the Cummins is a Medium duty engine, while the PS is considered light duty. If you get inside of them to compare weights and measures... This fact becomes more evident.

In my opinion... . Does this make the Cummins a better motor? Yes and No. The PS is still much more engine than many of us will ever use up. The Cummins is sorta like having bigger insurance policy. Besides, I don't care for the PS.

You'll hear stories about how so and so had this or that..... and 5 miles down some road... . this or that happened...

Chances are, everybody has a story or two against the other brands. So take those stories with a grain of salt.

Besides, think how boring life would be if we all sat around saying everything is wonderful and nothing ever went wrong. .

Saying the PS is a "POS"... . makes things more interesting.

SageAir,

Welcome! I have read about all of the problems on www.ford-diesel.com web site. From power steering problems, crackling, 2001 automatics failing, turbo bolts falling off, sorry warranty service, etc. , We too have our share of problems. However, I did see too much bashing at the www.ford-diesel site concerning the durability of the Cummins. There were lots of bashing of the Duramax however. I guess the guys that hang out at this site are more knowledgeable about engines.

There was a great article some time ago in the TDR magazine that compared the two engines. I remember vividly about how the Cummins has 7 main bearings that have around 2. xx of bearing surface verses 5 main bearing with 1. 7x sq. inch of bearing surface.

I live the Dallas (Ford country) and I'm constantly surrounded by the PSD trucks and almost all stick their noses up because I drive a Dodge. It seems these ford guys have such an attitude about their PSD, but don't really know the main difference in the engine. They all think bigger engine=more
power. I guess I just really don't like the PSD's very much. Please note my signature in reference to the powerjokes.

I totaly agree with you Sageair,I had a 99 powerstroke, and I loved it,I put 120,000 miles on it with good mileage and never a problem exept for the bad air box they put on the early 99 models, but it was a great truck, hauled heavy all the time.
The only reason I bought a Dodge was because Ford would not deal on a new truck they wanted 6000 more for the same truck right down to the cloth seats, everything was the same,so I went to my Friendly Genesse Valley Dodge and they gave me what I owed on the PS plus it was 5000 cheaper than the Ford was,I was real scared to giveup such a good truck, but I had an itch for a new one,and although I wasn't happy with my Dodge at first I wouldn't trade it for anything outthere now,but the Ford bashing is really uncalled for I think they make one heck of a truck but the Cummins is cheaper to fix,1 injector for the ford PS is 480 bucks and you can get a hole set for the cummins for that #ad

Sorry for the long post, just had to put in my thoughts on this. .

I have to admit that I could never bash a Ford either. My sister works her PowerStroke harder than anyone I know. It has never been maintained and I know if it only being washed once. Every day it starts right up. Sure does sound funny, though!

I used to own a 95 4x4 f-250 powerstroke and i traded it for my 99 3500, I have always been ford ALL THE WAY till i drove a dodge, i wouldnt get rid of my dodge for anything in the world, the power storke is an allright motor, the cummings has it beat in pulling, mileage, and durabillity plus they sound a lot better and un like my power stroke, the cummings starts every morning and is WAY cheaper to work on, you would think that ford made that **** motor out gold or something, anyway i guess what i am trying to say is, the cummings is the better diesel in my opinion.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. I truly expected a big blast O S for my views and was happy to see that you all are not so narrow minded that you use adding machine tape for scratch pads.

I loved my 95 powerstroker. I like the ford body beter then the dodge body (better put together, a little more of the niceties in it, yes, a little less glitchy)
But the Cummins is a way better engine, specially since I bombed it. Silky smooth, endless power, better fuel mileage. . . I love this engine. . .

Ranger Cb with Messenger kicker; Amsoiled throughout. . .

I'd rather have a 'stroke than gas, but ultimately, Cummins beats 'strokin'.

If there's no other reason, BOMBing is easier and yields more bang/buck. Doesn't seem to shorten the life, either. For an owner who intends to be the epitome of a "Tommy Too-Stock", either one is probably going to fit "the bill" quite well.

When it comes to a GM 6. 2,6. 5, or the new Isuzu 6. 6, however, "Just say NO"

I have always been of the opinion that you should be able to take your medicine as well as you give it. I love to have fun at the expense of the giant guppy with four wheels and elephant ears. The problem always centers around those few people (you know who you are) that take inconsequential things way way to seriously. Believe me when I say I know what it is like to be on the receiving end of a flame thrower because I own a Dodge. I just grin, take a sip of (insert favorite beverage here) and thank God that I don't drive that Phord sitting under the guy that just flamed me. Poor guy doesn't realize the disadvantage that he's at #ad

Cummins Power, don't leave home without it

You guys sure think a lot more of your Cummin's engines than I did when I drove one everyday. They only left me stranded 100 miles from Home twice in 2 yrs. "Shiny 290 HP with an exh. valve welded to the valve guide, and a 903 V-8 with a con rod You could have made a C-clamp out of it was bent so bad. I'm glad I wasn't driving the 350 HP that broke the wrist pin & the con rod almost completely sawed the engine in two. Only the top part of the block and the head held the engine together. That's why the call the Cum-a-part's... . #ad

The 5. 9 may be great in a pick-up, as is the PSD, But I'm not convinced it can't be killed, or that they never blow up.
Denny... ... ... .

ya see,
I'm not sure if the cummins or the ford is better,Its cheaper to bomb a cummins then a ford thats for sure, but $480. 00 for 1 injector? thats a little steep! Someone is takin someone to the cleaners!! The last time I bought an injector from FORD which was 3 day ago it was $242. 00.
Now we know that you can buy a complete set of cummins injuctors for that much or less.
The deal is that we have both an 01 cummins and 00 F350 in the driveway so I should know which one is better but I don't. No dought that the cummins motor will handle more bombing but will the chasis/body?
Now thr Ford can't handle all that bombing thats way there is only 2 of us with over 400hp and the other guy is over 500hp but we do know that our chasis/bodys will hold up much longer.
just for kick we have been thinking about a Duramax too but the 01 is to new and there are lots of things that GM needs to do before I would take the plunge.
So I guss my point is to each his own on this one, anything that has a diesel motor in it catches my eye. -------------------------------------- 00 F350 crew cab with 6" lift weld wheels 35"conti reunel front 12000lbs rear 9500HS winch bumper,4"exhaust awsome sound system some goodies under the hood 433. 9hp to the rear wheels and looking for more.
