Warning for California Pickup Owners!

My Son has a 2001 4Dr Auto P/S. When stock it shut down at about 92 mph. He put a Superchip in recently. Gunny S (TDR Member) and I were riding to town with him after making jokes about hiding so no friends would see us in a Powerjoke. He got on it on I-5 and it pulled pretty well, what surprised me was it was still pulling at 120. Did not see the Tach as I was busy giving my Son Hell for the crazy speed. That Ford Flat Ran Strong.

It has a lot of room and is a nice truck, but it ain't a Dodge Diesel. :D :D :D

*I think the speedo only goes to 100, but the needle was pointing to D2 on the shift indicator. :D :D :D

Power Jokes or Chokes aren't bad trucks at all, I just like my Dodge/Cummins better!:D

Honestly, both Ford and GM have done quite well with their current V-8 diesels.

Cummins vs Powerstrokes

At UPS we use 160hp 12v's and also the 444e or better known as 175hp powerstroke. Both have their pros and cons. The 12v's have much better take off than the PS. The electronic fuel inj on the PS must limit how they accelerate. The 12v's all have mech. pumps, some have the early VE pump and the later ones the P 7100. We have problems with the VE pump. As for maintanance and repairs, believe it or not, the mechanic has to work less on the PS. The 12v's tend to leak more than the PS. The PS tends to use oil as the 12v's don't unless they are leakers. We have a 24 footer box Intl. with the PS and it has 350k on it... no heads off, no rear crank seals replaced, just a water pump and a few clutches. This thing is run full throttle every night from San Luis Obispo, Cal. to Ontario,Cal loaded full(approx 500mi). It uses about 4 qts of oil a week. What do I prefer to drive at work if I have the choice?..... You all know that answer:D Chris

I ran up against me that suprised me a liitle, about a week ago.

It was a 99 373 gears 4 wheel drive and BD"s extreme 80hp chip.

We both are running 265 tires.

I am running 354 dif's.

Off the line he couldn't even hear his poor little powerchoke for all the noise I made trying to get traction.

I slammed him bad out of the hole untill about one football field then we ran dead even on top end. This little race went for 2 miles.

I will be upgrading my comp to the drag version. I'm not too happy about the defueling at 2700?This dropped my boost to 35psi untill it shifted then I would pull away agian strong at 40psi.

When I said dead even he was still a football field back. :-laf

A friend gave me a ride in his new F450 4 door PS yesterday. Visibility is great and so is the room. Too bad they don't have Cummins! Craig

DRR, you are right that they are no joke. For about the same money as an EZ and dd2's they will run right with a Cummins with an EZ and DD2's if not outrun it. The room is outstanding, and overall quality is just as good as a dodge. Over 350 RWHP the PSD gets insanely expensive to go further, the Cummins is tons cheaper to go further. I think the Cummins is a better engine for longevity and power potential, but the PSD is a nice package. Four real doors sure would be nice... ...

It Ain't No Dodge Cummins !!

I don't believe it will ever outpull or outrun (except maybe top end) my Cummins with the EZ, but it has lots of room and is actually a nice truck. I wish Dodge had went to a real 4 door. I am not interested in 4 doors but a lot of guys (including my Son) need the room. They would be driving Dodges if they had the room the Ford does.

There are a couple in my neighborhood. I asked why they didn't get a dodge so they could have a cummins. Both of them said they needed the 4 doors. They both like my truck but just wanted the extra room.

I have worked on countless PSD's, doing both performance and repair work, and some of them run really nice. A couple stand out in my mind, but the number one PSD I turned up was a '99 CC 4WD. We put a set of DD injectors in it, along with a Therminator, and exhaust system. Power was outrageous. :D I pity any EZ or Comp equipped Dodge that tries to outrun this PSD. It's got some serious teeth. However, any Cummins with some Stage 3's and a box will eat it up, hands down.

The '02 SuperDuty is a pretty nice truck. Very friendly and spacious interior, and lots of cool colors available. The CrewCab kicks butt. The 6-speed shifter still hits your knee in 1st or Reverse, which bothers me. The bogus trans temp gauge in the cluster for the AT's has gotta go though. Same with oil pressure.

My dream truck... One of these two...

Ford F350 Crew Cab DRW 2WD with an ISB and an NV5600, in that really snazzy Graphite Gray they just came out with. Gray leather interior. :D

Or...

Ford Excursion 2WD with an ISB and an NV5600, in that deep Forest Green with a silver break down low. :D Tan leather on the inside. :D

Guess I'll have to buy one with a PSD and then throw a REAL engine in there! :-laf

I have been looking for a F650 Ford "Low Pro" Club Cab or Crew Cab with a 5. 9 Cummins and a 6 ot 7 speed. I think I would either mount a dually bed or a custom hauler bed on it and use it in my biz.

I would not have a PSD because of the Cackle problem that at this point has no solution. Plus it is not that good looking unless you get the 350 6x6 JMHO. I just really don't like the way they sound, and a real diesel should be an inline 6.

There is a fix for the cackle problem... It involves an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator, return lines in the heads, and replacing the LL #8 injector. Computer reflash too.

The DD injectors were around $3500, parts only. Worth every penny though!

Personaly, I do not like working on the V-8 configured Diesel. Compare the injectors for example! I'll stick with the in line 6 any day!
