Powerstrokes: crank longer on start-up?

Is it just me, or do Powerstrokes crank for a few seconds longer than the Cummins on start-up? My Cummins fires IMMEDIATELY after just barely turning the key. The Powerstrokes seem to crank for a second or two before firing up... . I have even noticed this when I test-drove a NEW 2001. Anybody know why this is other than that they are crap?

The powerstroke if a fully electronic engine that uses high pressure engine oil to fire the injectors. (HEUI hydraulic accuated electronically controlled unit injector. )



A certain oil pressure is needed to fire the injector. and a desired rpm is required by the ecm before it will pulse the injector solonoid. the rpm is like 300 or something.



Same fuel system as the Caterpillar 3126, 3408, 3412



There is alot more detail to this fuel system but this will answer your question.

I have a customer that just recently got rid of his Ford diesel for a Cummins. His words, "This way I won't ever have to mess with another glow plug again!" Don't get me wrong, I like the PSD's alright but if I owned one I would be sure to always keep 100% top notch batteries in them and always keep one of those $70 glow plug relays under the seat because they seem to go out quite regularly (usually on the coldest day of the year). As far as my Cummins, hell son it starts better in cold weather than most GAS vehicles do

Don't forget........

The cam posistion sensor has to get in touch with the zip code of the cam before it can let the computer know which injector can fire first Not a dig, we will all have to deal with this

There is "something" that the newer psd's computer waits for before it starts. A certain pressure, rpm, position, etc. . Our 97's will fire on the first or second role. They changed something in the 99 and up's and it rolls alot longer.

Our 2001 cranks longer also. I seem to always get in it, bump the starter, and let off before it starts.

Ok guys I know you all will jump on me for this, butttt, yeah my truck starts alot nicer than any ford psd but I just had to have a new lift pump installed with only 10,000 miles. I hate that but not only that, now I'm waiting for the fifth gear nut to back off.



Now don't get me wrong. I love the cummins engine, but it has its problems that pi$$ me off.

UMMmm - Cobra - the "problems" you list are NOT "Cummins problems", one is a fuel delivery problem - the other a transmission problem - the thread topic here IS related directly to the PSD engine itself.



If we wanna start cussin' and DIScussin' various peripheral problems of PSD vs Dodge/Cummins, I'd venture to say we could both find PLENTY of live amminition!

Gary the fuel delivery problem on the cummins is as much cummins fault as the long crank time is the navistars fault. The long crank time is in the Ford Programming, not the engine itself.
