Pre Filter for fuel pump

When I came to work today there was a printout from the Cummins Website on my desk.

It is titled Customer Assistance. One of my mechanics was trying to figure out a problem on a Freightliner with a "C" motor in it. The problem came down to the lift pump electric circuit.

The interesting point is the last paragraph of the article and I quote:

"Cummins requires that a fuel pre-filter must be installed before the lift pump on B and C Series midrange engines. "

Do you think maybe it might be the root of our lift pump problems?

Could be that DC interprets that to be the in tank sending unit filter. Interesting though. I've wondered why most vehicles don't have a replaceble filter before the lift pump.

I just replaced the fuel sending unit within the fuel sending module while installing my Transfer Flow 54 gallon replacement tank. I removed and cleaned the sending module fuel filter during the course of the installation. It appears that the screen material used is quite fine, I would think it would be more than adequate for a prefilter. Additionally, it appears to be the same filtering media used in the gas tank screen (located at the gas cap) in my 6500 watt Honda generator... and that bad boy has trapped a lot of very small small debris.

prepump filter

i put a pusher pump back by the fuel tank--an aftermarket low pressure pump. the instructions said to put in a filter in front of the new pump, so i put in a simple 3/8 i/o fuel filter which didn't seem to have any significant restriction. the pusher is wired on a separate switched circuit. that was 1500 mi ago. all is working well at this point. time will tell if it protects the oem pump?? which is in series with the pusher. sure makes changing the oem filter a breeze!!

Pre Filter

I use a pre filter, that lift pump is kind of expensive,, as much fuel as I use my prefilter usually needs changing every 4,000 miles. My post filter never gets pluged, I still change it every 25,000 miles or less. Filters are cheap compared to pumps.
