Pre- filter for fuel??

I would like to know if anyone of the members are running a pre-filter for fuel between the fuel tank and the lift pump? I believe this would be a great idea to prevent any dirt, rust, sediment from reaching the lift pump and causing damage. If this has been already been done, then what name brand filter assembly are you running and what is the price of this unit?? Thanks for the help!!! TG on LI,NY

On my '95 there are already two pre-screens in place. One is in the tank clipped around the base of the sending unit/pickup module, the other is in the bowl under the fuel heater just before entering the lift pump. Both are a fine mesh type and do a pretty fair job of stopping a lot of the crud.

I use a "Racor 200R" spin on series, fuel/water separators for diesel engines. There are 3 different filters. 2 micron, 10 micron, and 30 micron. I use the 2 micron and have had no problems. I have it mounted to the cross brace on the frame at the fuel tank. It has a drain valve to drain contaminants. I am not sure what micron size the the engine filter is, but I think it is larger than 2 microns. This may be over kill but I have had no problems with getting fuel to the injector pump. I am running stock injectors with a Power Edge box. I change the filter every 15000 miles. The bowl on the bottom of the filter is clear so you can visually check for contaminants.

Had the same set-up on my 1992 with no problems.

Headlight, do you know the flow rate/resistance of the spinon filter? If your lift pump is in the stock location, adding any more resistance inline isn't ideal. Big Bob also installed a Racor filter before his lift pump but he got the Mallory unit and installed it back at the tank. If I installed a prefilter I'd go fairly porous (30 micron or higher number for coarser filtration) in combination with the stock filter. I assume you have a fuel pressure gauge to keep an eye on things.

I'm using the Earls in line, -8AN screen filter before the Mallory. I think it's a real good idea and sure won't hurt to have a pre-filter, just be sure to watch what the flow rate is. The Earl's is rated at 40 microns, which is what the Mallory calls for and flows at a rated 5-6 gallons per minute, yes, that's minute.
