I mostly post in the conversion section since I converted an '85 Ram Prospector to a 4BT; but I thought this group might better serve my question.

My transfer case (NP208) engaged into 4X4 somehow and it's stuck there. I hear some scraping noises below that slow down when the truck slows down while the clutch pedal is depressed. The transfer case shift lever is not in the 4X4 postion either. I have vacuum engagement on the front axle and manual lockout hubs. I have disconnected the shift shaft below and moved the rod and transfer case input lever into what feels like all the detent postions ( 4X4 LOW, Neut. , 4X4 HIGH, 2W HIGH) but I cannot rotate the front transfer case output shaft no matter which detent postion I'm in with the lever. Can I get it out of

4X4 gear somehow without taking the case apart? If I have to take the transfer case apart what do I disconnect inside it to allow me to run in two wheel mode for now. I cannot spend much time on it right now and need a quick fix. THANKS.

if you've already moved the linkage at the case and it hasn't changed, you most likely will have to tear the case apart. since it sounds like this is a daily driver, you should be ok running with the front hubs unlocked, for the short-term. a bonus it that these NP208s are about a dime a dozen, you could probasbly pick up a new one at the salvege yard and swap 'em in a few hours.

Thanks for the reply. I did find several places that had this year unit for $250. The bad one is out and I'm heading off with the core to get one.
