pre-oilers

is any one running one? are there brands to stay away from? is the benefit of pre and post oil worth having one more thing to go wrong? any input appreciated

I have a pre-luber installed in my '91 250. I love it! I change my oil every 5000 miles or so and the oil is really clean. Lots of advantages...



the majority of mechanical engine wear occurs during engine startup, 95% of the (mechanical) wear occurs in the first 10 seconds in the start of an engine.



Dry starts occur in very cold weather, very hot climates, following routine oil changes, after prolonged idle time and even after an engine sits for as little as 30 seconds. You can almost hear the engine scream for mercy when started! All vehicles experience significant wear when started dry. The wear occurs in the first few minutes, while the fast-idling engine waits for the oil to get to the bearings and other critical parts. With the Pre-Luber dry start wear is totally eliminated. The Pre-Luber prelubericates and prepresurizes the engine, delivering oil to the crankshaft and camshaft bearings, valve lifters, timing gear and other critical parts before it starts.



I don't remember the name of mine but I can find out and let you know. Only prob I have had was with the fuse connection corroding (after 9 years). Had to splice in a new one.

Forgot to mention one very important thing. Oil changes are a BREEZE! Just hook up your hose and pump the oil out into a bucket. No climbing under the truck and draining the oil.

Hi RGT, I've had a "Pre-Luber" since my truck was new in 95. Very happy with it but feel I got lucky with the MARINE unit I bought. I recommended the Preluber to two friends. One installed it and had it smoke a year later (Pump siezed, and then the electrical unit had a hernia). Other friend hasn't installed it (after 5 1/2 years). Wayne did a good job of describing the benefits, only change I did was to replace the quick disconnect coupling with a Hydraulic unit that has a valve on the male end (keeps oil from running into your armpit when under truck). As it is, the engine is going to outlive your truck anyway. Even with all the mods I've made to the truck, the oil still looks clean at 3-4K mile changes. I think you can find these units at Summit, for what it's worth. Good luck,

I bought a Pre-Luber from an outfit in King of Prussia, PA back in 97. I will put it back on the truck once I get it off my stored airplane engine (I cycle it every so often to keep the corrosion away. It came with an electronic brain that you can program to cycle the oil once it is keyed off (you have choices on cycle times... 30secs, 1min etc. ). There are a variety of wiring options, such as hooking up a light/led when the electric pump motor is on etc. Only problem I forsee is in the cold weather when the heater grid is on it really saps the juice. If interested send me a message and I will try and collect the info for you and email you on where you can order one... think the unit ran me about $400. 00 or so. . believe that it's the same unit as the Marine on mentioned earlier.
