This being first experience with Diesel Power, have no idea as to who produces the easiest user friendly maintenance text. I welcome some suggestions and or manual part number/manufacturer information. Thanks in advance:--)

Bob is right. Nothing against Haynes or Chilton manuals ( have owned manyof them over the years but the factory service manual is much better and more complete and more expensive. For my 2001 the factory manual is 2 volumes each 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches thick and yes it does cover the 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton trucks gas and diesel motor trucks of that year but so does the Haynes and it is about an 1 inch thick.

Definately get the '98 manual. It will come with a supplement that will cover your '98. 5 24v. There are quite a few differences between the 98 and 99 - the 98 is a half breed between the 98 12v and the 99. Also, I'm moving this to the 2nd gen forum.
