I notice that some fuel stops only have premium diesel. Some say premium is #1 diesel where normal diesel is #2, is that always true? Premium gasoline has a higher octane rating, what is the difference with diesel?

Is kerosene #1 diesel with NO road tax applied?

Is #1 diesel better for the 24 valve motor? Does it make more HP/Torque? Will I get better mileage? Will the injectors stay cleaner and wear less? Will the valve body last longer?

Are there any proven benefits to premium diesel, or is it for yuppie cars?
Thanks,
Joe Greer

Joe,I am no expert but the cummins is designed to run on #2 diesel. Just make sure it is from a reliable source. I try to find a place that sells a lot of fuel as I heard this is cleaner and don't sit in their tanks collecting bacteria and crud. I carry 100 gallons while full and always put the power service cleaner in which treats 100 gallons. At less than 4. 00 per bottle it takes care of condensation and helps the injectors stay clean. Depends on how often I pull the trailer I usually go at least 1500 miles between fillups. The 4. 00 is pretty cheap I think for every 1500 miles. I am sure someone else will chime in that knows more than me to add to this. Cetane is to diesel as octane is to gas.

Joe,
Premium Diesel is not #1! Kerosene is not #1. IMO, from best to worst (power and performance) would be.

Premium Diesel
Straight #2
Straight #1
Kerosene

Premium diesel "should" have automotive additives added to straight #2 plus cetane increased to around 50. Straight #2 should be around 42 - 45. Higher cetane is kinda like higher octane. Amoco Premier Diesel and Cenex Roadmaster XL two very good premium diesels here in the Dakotas. Premium should cost 2 - 4 cents more then straight #2.

Number 1 is winter heating fuel oil. No additives, but it will not gell. Check out www.cenex.com for all their info. Note they warranty the use of their fuel.

BTW, I have not used any blend or Straight #1 over the last three winters. Premium #2 and Stanadyne additive.

The problem with “premium” diesel is that the industry hasn’t yet agreed on a reasonable standard. They have standards all right. They have defined minimum standards for cetane rating, lubricity, detergency, cold weather gel resistance, fuel stability, etc. But right now a fuel only has to exceed the minimum standard in ONE category in order to be called premium. I understand that a new standard for premium diesel is now under discussion. High cetane will give improved cold weather performance, better mileage, smoother running, and possibly a little more power. Enhanced lubricity will extend the life of your injector pump and reduce engine noise. These are the only properties that you can sense in the way your truck runs.

Most premium diesels are just marketing tricks. One exception seems to be Amoco Premium 50, which has both a high cetane rating and good lubricity. There may be a few other premiums that may make your truck seem to run better. But overall, the Cummins is pretty tolerant of poor quality fuel. This is unlike many automotive diesels which were designed to run on the much higher quality diesel that is available in Europe. In North America, it is more cost effective to get reasonably priced fuel at a busy station and use a good fuel additive that enhances many different properties of the fuel.

Cetane is not necessarily like Octane.

Cetane indicates the rate of combustion. The higher the cetane rating, the better the combustion in a combustion engine.

Octane numbers indicate the rate of combustion in a spark engine. HOWEVER, the
higher octane gas will combust at a SLOWER
rate than lower numbered octane gas. This is to prevent pinging and pre-ignition.
I believe about 99% of the population believes the higher octane = higher/faster compbustion which is totally wrong.

Thanks for all the info guys, looks like permium diesel is not a good deal. No real standard makes it VERY hard to tell what you are buying. The local Marathon station manger was kinda lost, I will keep running Admiral Disel, $1. 359 a gallon here this week.

Thanks
