Preping for the Mag-Hytec

Finally am getting around to putting the Mag-Hytec on the 99. That sure is a nice cover - seems kind of a shame to keep it hidden under the truck.



Anyway, I've got the old cover off and am getting the surface ready for the new one. I am mildy surprised how rough the axle housing is. No burrs or ridges or anything, just not what I would call a smooth surface. Kind of looks like someone took a grinder to it.



Is the O-ring robust enough to handle this or should I just use RTV? How rough is too rough?

The most prep I've ever encountered is just smoothing down any numbers stamped in the sealing area.

The o-ring can handle the surface finish but here will be some stampings into the surface that will need to be addressed. Fill these and resurface or just use a little silicone on assembly.

Yeah, I've got the stampings too. 3 random 'C' s on the surface. At least I think it was three. The 90 wt fumes were getting pretty strong under there...



Thanks for the replys. I couldn't find any posts about extensive surface prep, and everything looks level, so I'm going to go with that.

Hi,



I was a little nervous after I read the directions too. I was sure it was going to leak. I brought home a stone from work. They are real flat. We use them to stone the beds on the CNC machines. I stoned the sealing surface on the diff. The numbers had high spots. Not bad. I filled in the numbers with Permetex and removed the excees with a putty knife. I probably did'nt even need to do that. No leaks at all.



Note: I liked the idea of Mag-Hytec giving you an extra bolt, washers, allen wrenches for the fittings. Those little things are what makes a product top notch.

I installed my Mag-Hytec Front Diff. Cover last weekend. Great product. Put the Rear Cover on about 4 years ago and not one drop out of it since. Seals great with just the o-ring.



I was also glad they include the extra bolt. I found one of the bolts threads were rather poorly machined and wouldn't go into the housing. Lucky the extra bolt was included and I was able to finish the job.



Now I only have to install the Double-Deep Transmission Pan. Mag-Hytec makes a fantastic product. Just wish everyone else could see them mounted on the truck!

Getting the surface as smooth as possible is a good idea. My o-ring is leaking through one of the stamps. Not a lot mind you but enough to get the cover wet. My personal preference is to have everything dry. The next time that I order Oil from Roy over at Mag-Hytec I will also get an o-ring. I sure hate the idea of having to filing the mating surface on the diff smooth.

Good product!

Well worth the money.



I used JB weld at the stamping spots and sanded the areas smooth. Not a leak yet with about 11,000 on it.



Makes you feel good knowing you bought a quality product when you see the "other" cheesy brands of aluminum covers out there!

I bought the cover for my Dana 80 on the classifieds here. The former owner didn't include the sheet that had the prep instructions. I called MHT and got the lowdown. You do need to take the high spots off and fill the letters with epoxy.



2 gallons of gear lube is a good thing!
