Prepping for POR-15

On another thread, I am trying to delay the death of my Jeep Patriot by rust. I have POR-15 cleaner, metal prep, and the POR-15 coating. As suggested, I am attacking rust spots with a pneumatic needle scaler and wire wheel on an old electric drill.

I cannot disassemble the entire vehicle, which means I can't scrub everything done to shiny. If I hit the tight spots quite well with the needle scaler and follow the steps then do you think I'll get good adherence and protection?

I hit everything with the needle scaler and wire wheel as best I could. I then followed the POR-15 process according to the directions:

(1) I applied the water soluble cleaner at 1:1. I let it sit on rusty areas as well as painted areas for somewhere between sixty minutes and ninety minutes. The time varied as I crawled around under the vehicle keeping the cleaner wet. If you are working over your head then make sure you have eye protection. Make sure you have plenty of ventilation - the stuff is nasty to catch a breath of. You rinse the cleaner off with water. The cleaner worked very, very well, although it did discolor any painted surface. This was of no concern to me since all of the surfaces are going to be coated, but if you are working on something that is painted and you do not want to coat then be careful.

(2) I applied the water soluble metal preparation solution liberally, concentrating on the rusted areas. I let this sit on there, keeping it moist, between thirty minutes and forty-five minutes. I rinsed off with clean water.

(3) I set a couple of box fans to blow under the vehicle overnight to help get everything completely dry. I applied three coats of POR-15 to the rusted areas then next day. This fluid is quite thin and the first coat really soaked in. The POR-15 appears to have adhered to the rusted areas remarkably well.

The next thing I am going to do is goat then POR-15 areas with POR-15 self-etching primer and then coat everything.

I am in the very northwestern part of Pennsylvania o the shore of Lake Erie - between northeast Ohio and northwestern New York.

The POR15 seems to have worked very well.

It does. I've seen it used on a few restoration projects with good results. Your part of the country along with the midwest have the worst corrosion problems I've ever seen. I'm sure glad it's gets cold enough up here to stop the rust. :-laf
