Hello folks I have an ongoing power issue with my truck ever since i bought it. Not real familiar with common rails as of yet. Seems to have low power compared to other trucks of same statue that i have drove. Codes that i get are P0251 and P0541. Truck will stumble going down the road occasionally not everyday. When i say stumble it feels like you turn switch off and back on. Tried a pressure box on it can't really tell no difference at all in performance. Fuel psi is 7-8 reading at cp3. From what i have read sounds like it very well could be the pressure relief valve?? I haven't went and dropped the $$ for a rail gauge yet. If this sounds like the problem comments on places of purchase would be appreciated. . Honestly i would carry it somewhere to have the pressures checked but around my area i don't feel as the dealerships are helpful or smart enough to be of service on this issue. . I maybe bad wrong though. But thanks for all the help in advance. . Tired of sick truck. .

The cheapest place I could find a relief valve was at an equipment service outfit, but it was still over $400 I believe.

Take the banjo bolt out and put a solid bolt in and take it down the road ... ... ... ... $0. 75 diagnostic tool.

the stumbling could be several things, it is fuel or electronics related. i would check your whole system at the dealer if you can. if not then shoot me a pm or call and i will go over with you how to figure out the problem, and get your truck back in good shape. thanks

Bad pressure relief valve is usually accompanied by hard starting, excessive black smoke, and high EGT's. Not always but usually.

If you have no other problems than what is described I would look at the FCA as a possible problem. Contact NGM and they can help diagnosis.

Dumb question, but I'm a newbie here. Is the pressure relief valve on the fuel rail, or before the CP3? I'm assuming it's on the rail somewhere.

7-8 PSI is good pressure for the stock pump. If it is still under warrenty tell the dealer to take it for a drive with the DRB and watch the rail pressure, and each injector pressure. That will save you from buying a $300 guage. :)

But it probly wont do it then. :p

Ya know I found out that the hand held OBD II scanner I bought from autozone reads rail pressure. suprise :) scanner was 150. 00

Mine didn't, it was just down on power.

I replaced that too, especially for the erratic idle.

Thanks guys for all the help. . I plugged the banjo bolt with a bolt and checked the performance and WOW what a difference. And to think all this time i was driving it and didn't know, what a DA. . Anyway i guess i should look at fixing this??? New or modified valve

I ran mine plugged up for awhile, but finally came to the conclusion that the relieve valve is there for a reason and bought a new one. I've played around with 3 different boxes and still running original injectors @ 250,000 miles too.

what size bolt did you use? Where did you get it? My truck is doing the same exact thing, stumbling, seems low on power.

The bolt is a metric 14x1. 5. Odd size i found what appears to be a bumper bolt not sure what is out of. Cut it off and welded a nut to it and put a copper o'ring on it to seal it off.

Hi

Could some of you CR experts give me a hand or better yet, your knowledge? The CR pressure relief valve has a history of failure. I have been looking on the web for a few days to find out why.

This is what I've heard. (1) The spring weakens and looses its force (2) The seat and poppet become etched (3) The poppet tip breaks off

What have you guys experienced? Have you done any testing on the CR relief valve?

Thanks for helping me out.

Rob
