Saw the primelok fuel filter relocators on sale for around 130 bucks but cant remember where. I have a friend with a 96 12 valve that wants one. I know it must have ben on this web site or in the Genos catalog but have misplaced mine. Was it in the latest catalog or in the last TDR magazine? Help!

for !@#$% sake, why do you want to make changing the fuel filter that you only change every 15k any easier?? lean over and unscrew. how much easier does it get? this must be for someone who has nothing better to do.

Cummins NW in Portland is the one who has had them on sale. They may make it easier to change the filter but get in the way of everything else. Stock filter change is an easy 15 minute job, tell your friend to save his money for something else.

I agree with illflem and shendren. I am considering taking off my Primeloc. It gets in the way whenever I want to do any work on the left side of the engine. It's not worth the money even if it's on sale.

Prime Loc

Let me see if I have this straight. Engine mount vs outboard location. 15 min. vs 2-3 min. to change. Fuel down the side of engine and starter vs slight smell on hands only. Hmmmmm. Tough choice. But then since I do not tinker each and every day on the left side of my engine perhaps I do not see the Prime Loc as being in the way as often as others.

Just a little attempt at humor folks. David, I have a Prime Loc. I love it and would buy one again when my currant truck goes down the road. Which I hope will not be for a very long time. I think long and hard before I spend my money for add on items but I well satisfied with those I have purchased.

The main thing the Prime-loc gets in way of that seems to need cleaning quite often is the TPS on a auto. If you have to move the Prime-loc a 2-3 minute job turns into 15 minute job.

Prime Loc

illflem, You made such a good point that I just went out and looked at my truck. Mine is an auto so I do have a TPS. This however is mounted toward the front of the pump and the Prime Loc sits somewhat further back. I can get both my hands in to work in the area of the TPS without trouble but the Prime Loc does take away some of this space. My main advantage here is small hands and arms. If I were working on anything significant on the pump itself this would be a a whole different story.

It took me 23 minutes from start to finish (firing up engine) the last time I changed my fuel filter. I do not spill fuel when removing the filter. I put a bag over it, like I do when changing the oil filter. I put the fuel filter on empty and fill it with the primer pump. About 120 pushes will do it. That takes about 3 minutes. It is about a once a year job for me.

Thanks for the reply guys. I found the add I was looking for on page 77 of the latest TDR Magazine. The Guy who is interested is planning on a trip to Alaska and is concerend about getting a bad load of fuel and isnt mechanicaly inclined. He saw my Prime-Loc and wanted to know more about it. Should I tell him to just forget about it and if he has a problem with his fuel filter to just tough it out and try to change it along side of the gravel road with limited tools? Or should he install it and be able to change it himself with a filter wrench in about 5 minutes along side of the gravel road? The bottom line is he is not like the rest of us who tiddle with our fuel pumps and tps and other things on the left side of the engine. Like I said before his truck is bone stock and he is happy with it that way and only wants to be able to easily access the fuel filter if he has to.

Don't know David. He could change his stock filter 5 times before he leaves and become an expert at it for less than the price of a Prime-Loc. In fact it will only take once to become an expert at it.

i Have the prime loc and a fuel pressure guage. I have found the prime loc to be terribly restrictive to the point of possibly destroying our vp44(cummins quoted me $2600 for a new vp44 today). Im removing mine and taking the 15 minutes to change the filter to save my very expensive injection pump.

Big_Daddy_T; Just curious how the prime lok is restrictive to the point of ruining a pump? It seems to me that Cummins is selling their goods with a double standard if this is so. Just asking, as I have alot to learn yet, and this web site is the place to get that. ;)

Hmmm, to me I think the Prime-Loc is a great idea at least for my truck. If I don't have any tools around and I get a bad load of fuel I need a 14mm socket or wrench, climb under the truck get dirty or muddy and then do it all over again to get back on the road, oh yeah and push the friggin plunger a bunch of times to prime. With the Prime-Loc spin off, spin on. A 5 min. deal and BTW I can write on the side of the filter when it was changed. If you guys can change a stock 97 filter in 5 mins. let me know.

I don't know about 5 minutes, but I think the reason you see them on sale is because nobody is buying them. I think the reason no one is buying them is because they are pointless. I bought one and sent it back- too much garbage and clutter for under the hood.

And what's worse is I think it creates a strain on the fuel system pumps. It simply wasn't designed to be that way, and I remember a while back about a number of people reporting problems with it.
