I'm going to be loading some . 338 Win Mag for elk hunting. I will be using Barnes Tipped TSX's in 210 grain. The suggested load from Barnes calls for Federal GM215M primers. The store I went to today didn't have any. Can I safely interchange one magnum primer for another? I have looked around on the internet, in several manuals, and can't find a definitive answer. What say you, load masters?

Sure you can substitute primers, but as stated previously, I to would strongly urge you to start at a lower powder charge and work up. Make any changes from brass, seating depth, primer, you are advised to work the load pack up to safe pressures. Good luck on your elk hunt.

Thanks guys. I changed my search parameters and found some more info. Consensus is that you stay with the same type of primer, i. e. magnum rifle, and start low. If you have a load that works well with one brand of primer and you switch knock the load down 5% or so, especially if you're near max.
