Competition So...What will I run?

Competition First official pass...

Haven't been around much lately, but a buddy was out at Houston Raceway Park (HRP) tonight. He is running a Prince Performance Twin system, 5 spd, EE pulling clutch in a 97 ex. cab 4x4 and ran a 13. 19 at 105 mph. He said he was having to feather it in 4th or he believes he would have cracked the 12's.

Not the fastest 12v out there, but pretty good for a daily driver. Before the EE clutch, his best was 13. 9. He could not believe what he was leaving on the table with the old clutch.

This is NOT a race truck. He just likes to mess with every Mustang/Camero/Vette he sees :D . Street racing in Texas carries a 1st time fine of $500. 00 (I could be wrong here) and if the Officer deems appropriate, impounding of the vehicle . I convinced him to take it to the track or he will be walking soon.

Gonna go to the f@rd boys Dyno day in Houston on March 13 and see what it does. Later... ...

"He said he was having to feather it in 4th or he believes he would have cracked the 12's. "

What gear was he leaving in? 4x4 launch? Why did he have to feather it in 4th... . was the truck getting out-of-hand?

Sorry for the deluge of questions...

Matt

No problem Matt!!!!

I will have to find out what gear he was leaving in, but I know it was 4wd.

He was taking it out of 4 wheel drive just before shifting to 4th if I understood him correctly. I asked why he didn't leave it in 4 wd thru 4th. He believed he had enough momentum going and wanted to put all the power to the ground via the rear wheels and was trying to take it easy on the transfer case.

But I remember reading a week or so ago (here on the TDR) that even though a 4 wd may be shifted out of 4 wd, the shafts continue to turn, but are not engaged (does that sound correct). I am not familiar with 4 wd on our trucks. I will quiz him a little more today and report back.

The EEP clutch is heavy, and it can't "run" into the next gear. It's a good pulling clutch, but isn't lightning fast through the gears.

The SBC weighs alot less, and is a good clutch to use for the 1/4 mile.

Congrats on the time.

More info on runs:

was leaving in 2nd gear, shifting out of 4 wd just before going to 4th. Reason for this was on the street when he is in 4wd and leaves it, the Seat Of The Pants feel is like it is robbing H. P. . He confessed also that he is scared of the T Case letting go :D .

He had to pedal it after going to 4th because of tire spin  , one pass actually had to get completely out of it due to tire spin. That lane had been oiled down about 10 cars ahead of him, and he thinks he got out of the groove.

Again, he is not a seasoned drag or street racer, but is quickly earning his stripes :D . He is like a lot of people here, likes to go fast, but pocketbook is only so deep. He also realizes that you can get carried away at the strip, and you have to be careful or things break quick.

Jim: Thanks for answering my questions.

I'm seeing a connection between Prince and fast 5-speed, 12-valve trucks... Whatever your buddy and Prince are doing certainly is working well... . they're both running really sweet ET's with NV-4500's.

Matt

Don't forget Jeff no long has to row through the gears.

SunCoast is trying there hands at some serious power now.

Merrick

So true Merrick... ... ... ... I haven't personally talked to Jeff, but understand if the Suncoast holds it will be QUICK... .

Jim

He did Matt.

It's amazing how sponsorship can change somebodies mind in a different direction ;)

Last time I talked to him at his shop, he wasn't too much for Auto's. I remember hearing something about a blown motor, and how it had to go back to EEP for more work. That's the last I have heard, and that was in ~Oct.

Merrick

When I last talked to Joe Hellman in Dec. (Houston Race) the motor was back but Jeff was busy with making a living (farming) and had not had a chance to put it back together.

I'm sure lots has happened between then and now. Joe H. 's truck made a 11. 99 pass some time after Houston I think.

Matt: Go to Prince Performance Diesel Page and watch Jeff launch in 3rd and run a 12. 14 at 119 mph. On the same page, there is video of Joe Hellman's truck (CC12V) smoking a Viper.

I just wish I had the funds to play right now... ... ... Good luck to everyone running the CTD this year, givem' He!!.....

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... . this year is going to be very exciting for us diesel motorsports freaks. There are a LOT of people building some SICK trucks.

That's a cool vid of him taking out a Viper! Too bad he's not the fastest 2WD diesel in the world... . How can they make that claim?
