Not that I have ever heard of, I have heard that there is a chance if you stick it all the way through where it hits the manafold on the other side, it can break when it expands.

I've broken two of them. One on the inside as you are asking and one at the connector.
Not a bit of damage to the turbo.

The probe wont even begin to melt till it reaches about 2000 degrees, probably higher. And of course if your EGT was that high, your pistons would probably already have holes in them so who cares about the turbo!. This subject has been covered in several other posts. Dont worry about the thermocouple melting or breaking off, its simply not going to happen. As it has been said MANY times before, you have a better chance of being struck by lightning

Or winning the lottery.

I've not had my EGT probe break off, however, my 'dipstick' auto-temperature gauge sending unit probe 'fell off' into the transmission #ad

I just received a new one from Geno's Garage,at my cost, & I'm hoping it was just a fluke, but if it happens again, I'll be p%#sed!

Hey call www.jannettyracing.com and spend $40 (Give or take) and get the kit that installs in the hot line from the trannie to the cooler. Will take about 40 minutes to install while lying on your back in the driveway and you will get super accurate readings and wont have to worry about the sender dropping off again. Great "i am bored and want to play with my truck" project.

EMDDIESEL,
The 'standard' big probe that has been used for years is not likely to melt.

However, there are other probes used for the same measurement which are not as sturdy.

In my case I had the 'first generation' probe for the SPA gauges which was far too thin to stand up to the vibration and heat of our engines. It failed inside the manifold but caused no damage to the turbo.

After a couple of us reported the failures, SPA bumped up the size of the probe.

Recently I have broken the top of this new probe at the connection point (wiring). It failed during 'mud season', our 5th season in Vermont that turns all roads in a vibration test bed.

I looked at the failure and realized that I had left the wiring unsupported. In the future I will wire tie the cable to the exposed part of the probe, thus eliminating the stress of the hanging cable.

Ditto on the wire securement, i worried about the same thing with the Vibration. I have always used AutoMeter Thermocouple's. I have not seen any the Spa thermocouples so i really cant speak for their reliability.
