I am having problems with a set of Goodyear Wrangler ATS 285-16-75 tires. The rear tires are cupping the center tread after 500 miles of use. Goodyear claims that I am spinning the tires which causes that kind of wear. I am pretty sure I am not spining the tires that much. But with a 179" wheel base and a bombed truck who knows. Any is that possible or are the tires running too much pressure (55psi) ?

Thanks

Kyle

I can't really help you out here except to say. . goodyear sucks. I had some 33x12. 50s on my old toyota and they were more square than round. Goodyear did not seem to care and told me since I used them offroad the warranty was void. Well the tire was an M/T! I asked them the definition of that and they told me mud terrain. Kind Contradicted that name if going offroad voids the warranty.

Also at work we have 2 2000 model International trucks. They came with goodyears on them all around. The rear duals on both trucks are cupping horribly. Some of the tread blocks are almost 1" difference in hieght. Goodyear says it the pressure but we run 26K of rear axle wieght and keep the tires at max psi. Funny thing is my truck(not my ram) has a set of cheap old recaps on it. They are wearing perfectly! Good luck with your problem!

What Bad said! My OEM 245 Goodyears were really ready for the scrap heap at 25k, but I managed to nurse them along to 31K, but the steel was coming through on three of them, the other was more like a racing slick than an AT tire. My 285 Cooper Disco's were only slightly better. I got 34 and change from 2 of them. I had one blow a sidewall for no apparent reason and replaced it with two new ones sending the other rear tire to the spare rack. Two of them are still in fair shape but have 15k fewer miles. Needless to say I hope I never see another Goodyear and I ain't real happy w/Coopers.

I Personally will NOT spend another penny on a goodyear tire ever again. I have had the absolute worst experiences with goodyear tires. I highly recommend Yokohama, my second recommendation would be Michelin.

Just my 2 cents.

Oh no, not Goodyear.

On my 79 Dodge I had both Trackers and Wranglers (I know, I should have learned the first time) and hated them both.

Measure your tread depth and drop the pressure to about 40 - 45 psi. Run them for a while at this pressure and check the tread again and adjust accordingly.

In 30K miles you can get some real tires:D

I had a 93 Ford Crew Cab Dually with a nautural 7. 3 in the hole.

The rears would were faster on the inside then the outside. I too had Goodyears on the truck. They would never "0" balance. I had them broke down and spun on the rims, re-balanced etc. I had to keep rotating them inside to out on the rears to make them last. I was running 65PSI cold in the rears as I do now. I got 55,000 out of them. The truck was an automatic.

Put on a set of Michelins next. When I sold the truck at 165,000 the rears had 80,000 miles on them and still looked good. I don't use anything but Michelins on my vehicles. My 96 has 62,000 on the Michelins "xps rib" tires. They're still looking good. I thru away the Goodyears on my 2000 at 26k and put Michelins on.

You might try putting the rears up front and see if they pull one way or another. Then you'll have something to talk about with Goodyear dealer.

Goodyear Tire.

I'm running Michelien XPS Ribs on my 92. I have never had a problem with them in 30,000+ miles. Only thing that is bad about them is they ride a little stiff.

I also run Centramatic wheel balancers with these tires. If and when my 92 dies, which I hope is never, but when it does my next truck will have Michelins and the Centramatic set up. Just like American Express - never leave home without it.

Previous set of tires were ???? and the centramatics wouldn't even help. The XPS's come in two styles, rib (highway) and traction.

CCD,,I currently run the Goodyear Wrangler H/T 245/75R16's on my rattlebox on Enkei wheels,,These are GY's best towing and load capacity rated tire they have mostly used on ambulances and chassis cabs where overloads are prevelent,,I purchased them on the advice of my area Goodyear racing tire rep we deal with and am very pleased with them,,Only problem I have is a balance problem related to lower tire pressures and the ability to torque the wheel inside the tire when stomping on the loud pedal,,Cupping of a tire can be done in many ways, improper balance, over or under inflation, lack of rotating and towing with underinflated tires causing excessive heat also do it,,I hope with all you have in your sig below you do not tow with only 55psi in rear tires,,,Also in my tire days I have seen a wheel simulator sets on dually's cause imbalance and cause cupping of tires,,Just a few ramblings.....
