Hope you guys can answer a question for me. This morning I was trying to change my oil and when I retightened the drain plug the outer flanged snapped like a twig and no I wasnt tightening it excessively not much at all really I am just glad it did not happen on the road that could have been expensive. Anyways my question is- Being that today is New years no real part stores or dodge shops were open so I had to settle for auto zone and some other fast food parts house. I did not buy the truck new so I dont know if my drain plug is the original but the one that they sold me both places was I am guessing about 5/8" maybe 11/16 that is bolt size not head size and yes it is metric but I am not good at converting the one that was in it is about pretty close to 7/8" definetly bigger than 3/4" and it does have a 3/8 drive on the top of it now my question is did someone put in an oversized plug or am I just getting the wrong part for some reason I just found it odd that I got the wrong part from two different places. Any ideas or help will be aprreciated also my truck is a 94 if it makes a difference.

They are selling you plugs for gasoline engine truck. You might try a Cummins place tomorrow or of course a Dodge dealer. bg

That is what it seems like although they were putting the right stuff in the computers not that that meant a whole lot I just wanted to check with you guys because this is the only "Dodge" cummins I had ever worked on and I wanted to see if you guys had the same size drain plug as I do. Thanks for the response

Turbo,

The drain plug threads are 22mm. Get the replacement plug from the Dodge Dealer. I've busted 2 oil plug flanges too. Even using the correct torque. I don't bother with the torque wrench anymore. Just snug it with a 3/8" drive rachet.

There are a variety of drain plugs other than the OE one. Geno's garage has a "heavy Duty" plug that shouldn't seperate like the OE one. It has a larger flange. Looks like a good plug. See below:

There are also 2 types that screw in the pan and have a drain valve. I use the "Finger Touch". The other is the EZ Drain plug. Both are good plugs. #ad

More info on all 3 below,http://216. 167. 98. 200/CoastalData/Category. cfm?&DID=30&CATID=1

Another option is the "Superplug" it has a powerful magnet that will pull ferrous metal particles from the oil sump. It's cheap insurance.
