Hi.

I've just finished installing a banks brake onto the existing HX35W turbo in my truck. 2002 3500 HO. I have a question since i can't seem to get a good response from tech support.

The brake works during warmup like it should, green light shows and ticks off as it should with any throttle. Voltages check out fine on the pins as listed in teh install guide.

However when running the brake does nothing at highway speeds. I think my problem is related to the white with pink tracer wire that you tap into that is labeled as the cruise control connection. I believe though i may be wrong that this is the speed sense connection.

The instruction say to tap into the white with pink tracer wire on the firewall connector. The instructions show 3 connectors. I only have 2 connectors on the firewall in that general area. If i consult with the wiring diagram i have, i see that there should only be two of them there and that wire white with pink tracer is listed as brake sense.

Am i tapping the right wire or am i missing something else obvious?

thanks

I have a 2001. 5 auto with the banks brake. My instructions say that there is a white wire with a red tracer very close to the white/pink wire you need to find. Check all connections again. You should have 3 PCM connectors behind the air filter, but with a manual maybe you only have 2.

There's your problem.

Sorry, did enough Banks product installs that amazed me how they can over complicate the simple, and the bang for the buck is a joke. Never mind the year to year changes in the vehicle wiring that they do not keep up with.

More often than not, I ran into Banks instructions telling me to tap the wrong wire.

I have a 2002BRE factory service manual. I need to see a copy of the install instructions for the brake to tell you which wire is what.

The Wt/Pk wire from the PCM (gray connector) is the brake switch sense (brake pedal depressed yes/no) and the Rd/Lg wire is the speed control switch sense (cruise on yes/no). Both wires run through the two connectors above the intake on the firewall. The Wt/Pk (brake) goes into a Yl/Rd or Yl/Bk in one connector, Rd/Lg (cruise) goes straight through. Then there is the speed sense that banks uses to turn off the E-brake below a certain speed, which is a Or/Bk wire IIRC.

update

I'm working from the 2001 BRE myself. don't have the one for the 2002 year model.

The wiring diagram though agrees with what i see in the truck

banks manual says tap the white with pink tracer on the firewall connector on the transmission side. That is the wire that is yellow with black coming out of the other half of the connector (engine side). instructions are to cut that wire and set it up to connect to the brown pair of wires on the harness. I did that.

The other wire in the banks harness is orange and is routed all the way across the firewall to the C2 connector on the PCM. There were only two wires on it and pin 27 is the orange / white wire as noted in the banks instructions. that is supposed to be the speed sensor wire according to the wiring diagram i have. That is what i tapped into for the orange wire on the banks harness.

The problem is that something is telling the brake to not engage when driving at highway speeds. it works correctly through warmup but never will go on when i drive at above 30 mph.

Now i did not know about the cruise control aspects of this until talking to the tech support person where i bought the brake. they want me to take it out and see if switching on the banks brake cuts off cruise control. I cant check that until i get back home end of this week.

i can't upload the manual but it is the same one they have from their website.

Solved the problem

I found the problem was with the wire connected to the PCM. The connectors that banks ships with the kit that are male spade type have a problem because they are not centered and don't want to be. The connector picking up the speed sensor input from the PCM was not making contact to the tap. Once corrected the problem was resolved and the brake started working correctly.

Hooray!!

On to the next bits of work which includes hooking up guages for trans temp and diff temp and changing fluids.
