Prodigy Brake Controller - Wiring

I recently installed a Prodigy brake controller on my '02 2500 w/ factory hitch and wiring harness.



The manual references a display status of powered but not connected. My unit does not power until I connect to the TT.



Although the unit seems to work as expected, I am curious to find out if anybody else has this experience. Also is this a symptom of something larger that I am not aware yet?

Mine is blank until you step on the brake, then it has one red dot that goes out after 15 or so minutes, providing you do not step on the brake. This is without the trailer hooked up. I called them and they said it was normal.

956wheel is correct. It tells you in the owner's manual that system powers down until you hit the brakes(with key on) and then it comes on. Mine works exactly as advertised in the Prodigy manual. If yours doesn't work that way I would assume it's not wired correctly. The Prodify connector plugged right into the Dodge connector on my 2001.

What a difference. I had a timed controller previously and it threw me all the place or didn't stop in time. Had to adjust it continously. With the Prodigy I just set it and leave it and I stop much quicker.

Just checked and mine definately does not power until I connect the TT. The truck has a factory hitch with 7 pin connector. I used the factory brake controller wire harness with the Prodigy connector as well. The wiring connections from each harness is reasonable simple. I am thinking that the factory wiring is incorrect. Perhaps a grounding issue?



I agree that this controller is far superior to the timed controller that I had in my last truck. I always had to adjust the timed controller for slow moving verses driving speed. And therefore I also feared that someday I would get into an emergency situation on the highway with having forgotten to turn up the controller.

I was told by Pard's (a hitch installer in SLC, UT) that the reason the Voyager and Prodigy only power up when plugged into the trailer is that the Dodge's computer would be looking for a 5th brake which will result in messed up fuses and other wierd things happening. I had a timed controller and the one I had he said would burn up the brake wiring on the trailer if a situation happened where you are stopped in a traffic jam and you keep your foot on the brake for a while. He said he proved it to an engineer with the manufacturer (not Teshonka). I bought a Voyager and it has been working great. It plugged right into the factory receptical.

ramcam6, Did you purchase the Tenkosha wire harness for your Dodge? Does your unit power up when not connected (groser's description was what I expected)?

I,m going to reread my book, Mine powers up (2 red dots)

without the trailer being plugged in. They go out after a few

minutes. Works great.

FMcClaren the two dots light up on yours because the boost function is on. Turn the boost function off and you will have only one light.

wesoule, I had to pay him $10 and he butt spliced the correct connector pig tail to the Voyager there in front of me. Then I took it and plugged it in. So I don't know for sure if the Prodigy lights up momentarily or not, just that the Voyager doesn't. Thanks, Charlie
