Overweight Truck Campers

Well I have the Prodigy on order and should be here this next week. Where is neatest place for install? Ash tray would be nice I think. Any one have Prodigy installed in ash tray? Any pictures of that installation? I have 5 speed manual if that matters. I also have Brolin CB mount. Only thing is I use that for two meter transceiver and CB is under dash. Don't really like under dash. Have long legs and drive with seat close to steering wheel. My Voyager is mounted under dash in line with parking brake and that was not good choice.

I just finished mounting mine in the ashtray. Real easy and I really like it there. I used the "pocket" mount that they supply and put the Prodigy in as far as it would go until the tabs on the side of the mount hit the front of the ashtray (leaving just enough room that I could still spread the tabs to remove the Prodigy from the mount if I wanted. ) Doing it that way, the screw holes end up being just slightly on the front angle part of the metal at the top of the ashtray hole and that leaves the Prodigy itself at a nice angle slightly upwards. Also, before doing this I removed the metal from the top inside of the ashtray (3 screws) and removed the lightbulb that is used to light the ashtray -- didn't figure I needed it shining down on top of the ashtray all the time.

The following won't apply to your 5 speed, but after I did the above, I found that when I shifted my automatic into Drive that the shift knob completely blocked my view of the Prodigy display -- solved that by putting in a 3/4 inch space between the top of the ashtray hole and the mount and all is fine.

I also mounted mine in the space left by the ashtray. I'm going to make a walnut spacer for the top Real Soon Now. Here's a picture of the monstrosity.

Jim,

Since you obviously don't have an automatic and didn't have the problem I did, why didn't you mount it tight to the top of the ashtray opening???

I mounted mine in the ashtray, but could not use the quick disconnect mount (it would not fit into the space) on my 96'. I used the standard mount that came with it and drilled for it to attach to the ashtray bracket. I installed it as far back as possible without effecting the manual control on the Prodigy.

The truth: I had a good reason at the time, but I was thinking the same thing as I took the picture. I have no idea now.

Paul,

I mounted mine under the steering wheel on the bottom plastic cover. Used rivets to hold the metal bracket on. the wireing harness follows the steering column to its connection. Can't see the LED while driving, but I don't need to once it is set up. Easy to hit the manual brake control. It's out of the way and most people who get into my truck never even notice it. My father saw my install and wished that he had done the same. :)

Very easy install.
