I have heard lots of references about custom torque plates and many plates ground flat, but what would happen if a "custom" profile went farther "in" than just grinding the plate flat? What if half the plate was ground off? I have heard that some people just take the plate out, but I have also read that the pump must have some kind of plate to keep something from breaking over time.





I have another question. I need to have pump work done fairly soon and when I talked to the local injection shop they said they can tune it to the max with a stock plate, and that adding a plate would mess up the fueling characteristics that they would build it to. Is this true? I currently have a #6 in my 160 pump. If I have them tweak it to flow all that it can, will putting my #6 back in or some other profile help or make things worse? I also want to add delivery valves and I'm contemplating laser cuts(I love smoke!!!!).

Instead of spending the money of having your pump "tweaked", i would try and find at least a 180 or 215 pump. A lot of times shops charge a lot of money to do some adjustments. A flat plate ("0") can be made by grinding your stock plate. Running no plate can be dangerous if your rack travels too far too many times and keeps on hitting the pin in the pump. I have heard somewhere that the pin can fall out and take out the pump. Your best best is to go with a 10 plate of a 0 plate. Keep on having fun.
 
Has anybody ground a plate "farther" than flat? Like instead of grinding it flat, maybe grinding a big curve or just a flat profile about 1/4 inch "deeper" than if the plate was simply ground flat. Are there any results to grinding a plate "way down"? Hope this makes sense. Jordan
 
Usually flat and full forward is close to 18mm of rack travel, which is max that is needed. You can go 21, but you have to do some stuff to the front plug.
 
Hope this pic posts. What I was trying to describe was grinding a new profile along the black line, but would it be "too far in"? Would this act like not having a plate in the pump and let the rack hit the pin? Jordan



It only took me an hour to get the pic from the camera to TDR land. I'll have to post more pics in the future so I can try to get them clearer.

The main reason to take the pump in is to fix the irritating intermittent problems it has. The injection shop said since they have to put it on the test stand anyhow, they will tweak it however I want, no extra charge. They will warranty the pump regardless of how much fuel it puts out, including if it has high flow delivery valves as long as they determine that any problem didn't happen because of the delivery valves. Being between jobs this appears to be the most affordable option right now. If I could afford to I would get a stupid pump or something comparable.



Are they full of it when they tell me that a non stock plate will mess up the fuel curves they might build into the pump? They insist that they can get every bit of fuel out of the pump with a stock plate just moving it forwards if need be. If I don't put my stock plate back in before I take it in they will take it out and put a stock plate in and tune and fix my pump from there.

It sounds like the shop you're dealing with has a limited amount of experience with performance fueling settings. I'd find a place that does pulling tractor pumps, they ususally have a good level of expertise but might not know much about truck set ups. A good shop will want to know how much power you want to make and then grind a plate and set the pump up with that specific plate.



As mentioned above, you are a bit limited with a '95 plate but at least it's a 5 speed, not a 160 hp auto pump.



You could also send your pump to PDR (where my pumps vacation) or one of the other vendors that post here, they are the masters.
 
LaserBob did my timing on sat. and man what a difference. Though it was going to take a pump rebuild to smooth out my truck again. Bob did wonders to the truck.



Extreme1-I do have a 160 pump :{ , truck used to be a slushbox. :{ Wish I could have my pump tuned but now clutch is slipping worse-so thats my next big spend.



Forrest-how much does taking the spring out of the afc increase the smoke? The wheel is all the way forward now, wont turn any more.
