How do you edit your profile. new to the site. Why does the envelope to the left of the thread have a black dot on it?

At the top of the discussion forums click on user control panel and there you will find the edit profile section.

and the envelope on the left has dot in it if you've posted to that thread - that way you can keep track of things you've posted on.
