A friend asked me how programmers work and what might be suitable for his 2001 2500LWB EXT Cab. I said I don't know because my 97 is old school. And I think I like old school better, but that's not the question. The question is which programmer(s) would be suitable for a 2001 model year truck? Are they tied to the vin of vehicle or can one unit tune multiptle trucks?
This discussion started when another buddy with a programmer on his 7. 3 Powerstroke and combined with an airbox and 4" exhaust is claiming enormous hp/torque (200+) gains combined with increased mileage to the tune of 3 to 4 miles per gallon???
I find this hard to believe. I didn't think you could have your cake and eat it too? So now my friend with the 2001 dodge is trying to keep up with the jones??
I told him to save his cash unless he wants to buy a transmission... .
If someone would point me to the big players and or the differnt types of programmers, that's all I am hoping for, then I'll do the homework. My only experience with tuning is with new LS1 based gas engines where you are flashing the PCM, changin codes etc. From what I have read so far it appears there are fueling boxes which piggyback the ECM??? I have lot to learn, but was hoping for some insight.
Thanks
Chris (glad I have a 12v, all mechanical stuff)
