Does anyone have any opinion regarding the Prolong oil treatment product? The infomercials look really impressive, running engines without oil etc. Their web site has testimonials from fleet operators that claim saving money on fuel and maintenance. I'm hesitant to put anything in the motor that the manufacturer does not recommend.

I believe it was Consumer Reports that put their info-mercial to the test. Their engine lasted 13 minutes before it siezed. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

I'd stay away from all oil additives. If you are really concerned about the oils capability change it more often. If it's the cold/dry starts you're worried about buy a pre-luber (pressurizes the oil system before engine startup). However, with the expected longevity of our engines (400,000+ miles) without anything special I wouldn't worry about it.

These products are not only worthless, but may cause serious damage to your engine. There is a web site that describes what can happen and how these things work. If I can find it again I will post the URL.

Joe,

Thanks for the link. That was very interesting about the teflon, I was one of the people who bought slick 50 years ago to put in a gas engine. I never had any problems with it, but more experience with fleet trucks has shown me that it is totally unnescessary. The last company where I worked ran hundreds of s-10 pickups, mostly with the v-6s, and mostly stop and go city driving. We changed the oil every 3000-5000 miles with the regular jiffy lube kind of stuff. We never had any problems that were wear related in the engine before at least 150,000 miles were on the trucks. When I left, I had a truck with 130,000 miles that ran like new because I kept the oil changed.

Last week at the VA state Samboree, I met a guy who has been working and rebuilding diesels for 30 years, mostly tractor trailers. He has never used additives, and says they are totally unnecessary if you just keep the oil changed. He said that your main problem is with the fuel. He has used many different fuel additives and recommends FPPF as the best when it comes to pump lubrication and water dispersion. He also talked about fuel bottoms that are sold from the bottom of large fuel storage tanks that sell really cheap to the lesser known dealers. He said also to watch for the big filter on the side of pumps, that is a good sign that you are getting good fuel, some places don't even filter the fuel. He has a shop in PA, if I can find his card (I think it's out in the trailer) I will post it.

Joe,
Thanks for that great article. I figured there must be something to those oil additives or they would not be able to advertise false claims. Well, I feel pretty comfortable now with sticking with the manufacturer recommended oil and not wasting my $ on bogus additives. Those Prolong commercials had some big time ex-racers promoting their products. It just seems weird to me that someone would sacrifice their good name to promote bad products. I guess money talks...

I believe that "prolong" is the extreme pressure additive that breaks down into hydroflouric acid on the long term use. So the ads don't out and out LIE, they just tell one part of the story. Definitely protect against metal to metal contact, then they dissolve the bearings. People PAY to put this stuff in thier cars?????

If it really makes hydroflouric acid that's bad news indeed. Stay away from that stuff for sure even in small quantities. I worked a programming contract for a company that makes chip making equipment that uses that stuff. After the safty lecture I was afraid to go near the plant.
