yes, it gives your more power and mileage, but it is a fuel, just like diesel, and the ability to keep it turned down is very hard (at least it would be for me)
most will agree that it hurts the longevity of the motor
Propane is a "dry" gas in the sense that it has no lubrication qualities to it. It acts as a catalyst for the diesel fuel when injected. Instead of burning 85% of the diesel fuel you wind up burning 95% to 97% of the diesel for a more complete burn. It also adds pressure to the cylinder which promotes more wear and tear, as we all like the added power.
The rule of thumb is when ever you bomb your truck with a fuel mod that promotes more power, you are shortening the life of the engine due to additional wear promoted by making more power. In other words, you trade longevity and reliability for higher performance ability.
There are those folks that run propane on a regular basis with very good results. The people I know that run propane injection on top of their diesel are rather stingy with how they use it. Most of them have is set up to come on during certain boost demand events to help when they are pulling a 5th wheel. Normally they have these set for when they start up a hill. On the flat and level they might pull 5 to 8 lbs of boost while cruising with a load but then turns on when going uphill to help lower the EGTs and give better power.
There are two mode of use. One is power and one is economy. The difference is the amount delivered or what orifice size you use. If your looking for a little help on the hills and not wanting to kill your engine with too much boost then go for economy mode. The EGT's get cooled down about 50 to 100 degrees and you get a little better mileage when pulling the hills. You won't need it on the flats. You can get systems that can be custom set for what ever boost pressure you want the propane to come on at.
It will help in you low end. Just remember to use is sparingly.
