I think the cam is/was PDR's mildest cam. Can't remember for sure since it's been 4 or 5 years since I did it. As I remember, it added just a few thousandths of lift and just a couple of degrees of duration. No cutting of pistons. I can't say I really noticed a big improvement but I think it runs cooler and boost is a bit lower (less restriction on intake). When I put the ported head on a few years ago I discovered a few valves had kissed the top of the pistons! No damage, fortunately. Make sure your gasket gives you the needed extra clearance and you have the heavier springs in.
I'm sure the cams available now are alot better.
The higher timing really improves the top end. I have a friend with a '98 auto and he loves his at about 21 or 22 degrees. He'll bump it up to that for a day at the track, but feels more comfortable for longevity and mileage at 18. 5 +/- for daily driving. I haven't run mine over the current 18. 5 to know how it would be. I'd probably not want to bring it back down either!
If your head is set up for it (studs) I'd certainly run it up to 18 - 19 degrees.
