My truck has an EGT, and I have not ever really "used" it for real loads yet. I have noticed that the EGT gets up there pretty quick when pulling, it is redlined at 1250 I think it is. Obviously this gauge was not made for this truck, therefore "redline" is not necessarily bible. What is a reasonable EGT to allow before finding another gear or something, I am about to leave with a 35ft 5th wheel on behind?

It would seem that your red line is right , I read a lot of post that state that 1,200 deg is bad for extended time , the question is how much time , maybe 5-10 minutes , an other spec I do not remember .
But then there are the guys that say other wise [ factory spec is the 1,200 , if I remember ] .
Once your mod you need to do your own warrentee ,
To help with temps , bigger turbo , a larger exhaust [ 4" ] , a little less fuel , maybe a 10 plate , adjust your fuel screw back a little ,

The 1250* redline is a reasonable place to seriously consider finding another gear. With the auto transmission, that would be unlock the TC or get out of OD.

Sure, that is what I do, easy with the automatic. I only questioned it since the meter and my truck were not made by the same people.

Don, after I did the very mild mods listed in my truck sig, I have had a problem with high egt's. One of the really knowledgable members recommended not exceeding 1150*. I had seen 1250* several times pulling a 25' (only 5500#)travel trailer up long grades. I took his advice and have found that the only way I can stay at 1150* or below is to slow down. If I punch out of overdrive, the convertor unlocks also, and rpm's go up to 2500-2800, boost jumps to 32-35# and egt will go to 1250*- 1300*. Only way to lower it is to let off and slow down, sometimes to 55 mph or so. The convertor will lock up again and I can stay around 900-1000*. On level highway, I can run 70 in overdrive, with the trailer, at about 850-900*. I believe that a larger turbo would lower egt's about 100*, but for now, I just have to slow down.

I may be too cautious, but-------

Hope this helps, Tom

Hey, Lake Jackson, been there, done that.

You seem to be about the same as mine in temps and controlling it, as you have found I am sure, it shoots up there in a hurry when a hill comes up, got to watch it closely. I don't feel comfortable using cruise control with a load, in my old age fog I might forget and let it do a cook off. I am not wild about bombing my truck, it has plenty of power for me, but I would be interested in any mods that would give positive results in lowering my EGTs. Suggestions anyone?

After I did the DTT I did the KDP and 3K GSK. I ran the same route with my 13K+ fiver and recorded the EGTs and rpm. With the #6 I had never had EGT problems but my transmission wouldn't hold over 24# boost in OD loaded prior to the DTT. I would have to back off and occaionally gear down to D.

I added a BHAF on the next run over the route and

that cut my EGTs at least 50 degrees.

I did these with cruise on which "spikes" EGTs more than my usual slower throttle application.

My highest EGT was 1200 degrees at 1600 rpm and 17# boost. I would normally have shifted down on that grade if traffic slowed me that much but I wanted to test it "lugging" a bit.

Accelerating out of a rest area in D at 65mph and 2800rpm 24# boost I hit 1100 EGT and cruising at 70mph 2K rpm and 24# boost up a hill it ran 1100 EGT.

According to what I read the EGT gauges are usually very accurate.

For about $40 the BHAF is really a bargain. Especially when you need a new filter anyway. Mine has over 35K on it now and is still looking good. I would have replaced a regular filter already.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Interesting. I bought a BHAF about a year ago, it is still in the box in the shop. I had become convinced that it would not help a bit except when running very high RPMs, which I simply do not do. Maybe I ought to go put it on since I already have one. Anybody else agree with that?
