I just purchased a PS boost elbow, the blocked type. This will not allow any excess boost to the wastegate at all. With an empty truck I can see 30 lbs. boost. Question is, how high will the boost go with a load on and a hard pull? when will my stock turbo self destruct?

With the mods in your sig you are seeing about the right amount of boost. On a hard pull you can probably make 35 or 36 PSI. Your turbo will live in that range, just try to let off easy when you are deep in the boost. I would not recommend going over 38 or so, even at 35 you are overspeeding the turbo some, just not as bad.

Not PS elbow

I just emailed Practical Solutions. Gordon asured me that this is not thier elbow. I purchased it along with a PS boost module so I "assumed" it was a PS elbow also. I think just to be safe I will buy an adjustable elbow that dumps at 30 lbs. I want more power but I don't need a turbo scattered all over the place!

:D

elbow

A blocked elbow is dangerous. The wastegate is there for a reason, to prevent excess boost. Having eliminated wastegate action via a blocked elbow you are only limited by the amount of fuel your fuel system will deliver in terms of the boost that can be generated.

I agree with the previous post that it is essential to have some way of regulating boost.

I think you have the best idea. Limiting boost to 30 lbs is probably a good safe limit.

Hey Cannonball!

George,

I purchased the boost elbow you mentioned direct from Practical Solutions. I'll mail you a copy of the receipt and cancelled check if you like. I made numerous attempts to contact Gordon by phone, and he would not return my calls.

Gordon,

If the blocked boost elbow you sent me is not yours, who's is it? How about the right one?!!!

I have run my stock turbo over 33-35psi a bazillion times and no trouble here. I have been running high boost for the last 40,000 miles. The main concern with overrevving the turbo is if you are at high elevation, it really raps out if you run past 30psi and you're above 6-8,000 feet.

Blocked?

I have one of these, and there is a set screw on the elbow. If the screw is loosened, wastgate setpoint drops. . and vice versa. lower boost pressure till EGT starts to rise... . with 275's and a VA 28-32 psi is perfect...

After reading these post I now have a concern. I have the boost elbow that has the screw in the elbow that I bought from another member. I've tried un-screwing the screw to create less boost. No matter how much I un-screw it, it will produce at least 30 or more. My gauge only reads up to 30. When I un-screw it, the screw feels loose like it could vibrate out, then I would be in a wourld of hurt. Any suggestions on what I could do? Thanks in advanced.

Edge Comp Boost Elbow

Hi everyone. I received my Edge Comp Box today and as I was installing it, I payed particular attention to the boost elbow. Mainly because it had a small hole drilled in the side as to allow pressure to be vented to the atmosphere. If you try to blow through the elbow while covering this drilled hole the elbow becomes very restrictive. I can't remember how much air if any would pass through as it didn't seem important enough at the time for me to remember. I just thought it alittle strange that it would be venting pressure to the outside air constantly. However this post got me to thinking.

If you wanted to raise the boost, wouldn't it be safer to just use a stiffer spring in the wastegate? That would keep your safety valve in place which is there to vent pressure fast if the turbo overspeeds. With the restricted elbow the turbo has no way of venting if it suddenly overspeeds. I know finding the correct spring for the amount of pressure wanted would be a pain in the butt.

I also have a 93 Mazda twin turbo RX-7 and the guys that Bomb those things with a large single turbo either run a long piece of hose into the cockpit somewhere with an adjustable valve to control boost "economy version" or they use an electronic boost controller.

Please feel free to jump in here and correct me if I am missing something. I just want this truck to last a long time and I like to do things the right way. If it costs more money to be safe, well it just costs more money.

My Mistake!

Hey eveybody, I need to correct a wrong.

After talking with Gordon at PS I pulled my boost elbow back off and took a closer look at it.

My Appoligise to Gordon and Mav1. This elbow is NOT BLOCKED. Just as Gordon said it has a very tiny hole in it and another small hole in the side to vent out.

This elbow works fine and limits my boost to 30 lbs. just as Gordon said it would. I towed a 11,000 lb. load over a mountain here with a 5 mile long 8% grade with 3 switchbacks. My boost never exceeded 30# and my EGT never exceeded 1050 WOT, 4th gear.

This is what happens when we "assume"
