Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) PS Pump Leak

Is it pretty common for the power steering pump to leaking around the back? It's hard to see exactly what from, I'm not sure if I should just take the pump off the vac pump and take a look or?? I hate leaks!

If its anything like my 98. 5 with 30K miles, the darn thing is rusting out, along with just about all the metal parts under the hood.....

The high pressure line is the threaded line leaving the pump. It threads into the main fitting that retains the flow piston. Around the main fitting is an O-ring. Pretty easy to change out from the bottom side - take off the high pressure line (17mm wrench), take out main fitting (1" socket) and replace O ring. While you are in there, take out the flow piston and clean the flow piston screen for renewed power steering performance.

I guess I need to do that. It was low the other day so I put in about half a bottle of Lucas PS stop leak. Well now it's real bad. Stop leak that makes leaks worse... just awesome. I wasted $9 on that stuff too!

I pulled the line off today and put a new O ring. I'll see if it still leaks and I'll pull the main fitting if it does. I swear working on this truck I need skinny 4' arms!

Is it leaking engine oil or PS fluid? If engine oil then look at the vacuum pump to PS pump seal. It's a common and easily fixed leak.

It's leaking PS fluid. Still is too. I have it apart right now (again). I need to get an o ring for the main fitting.

Do you have a service manual? If not I can scan the exploded view that shows all the seals and O rings.

My service manual doesn't show any internal blowup of the PS pump. It is really weak on that part.

I got that one. Thought maybe you had the internal exploded view of the pump itself. I don't know if they come apart.



A couple weeks ago I was doing the PS pump BOMB (flow piston screen clean and spring stretch) and got the spring and piston backwards. Ended up having to pull the pump to get the darned flow piston out of the barrel.



I was disappointed at the level of detail on the internal PS pump parts in the FSM - they should cover every BOMBable part in full detail. :-laf

Mine's been leakin for a couple years. Kelli at GEN3 MotorSport finally found what others had been missing, why my transmission was taking a pint to a quart a day. Reliance Truck & Auto used heater hose instead of high pressure hose for the transmission, even worse left the SS or aluminum tubing rubbing on the crossmember, no wonder there were 4 tiny holes in the line. Fixed that and thought I was good to go. Tried using the Ram to jump the Ford, bad idea. Wouldn't do it and blew up the power steering pump trying. Kelli said to bring her back. Rebuilt the pump and a new steering box and I'm on my way. Only delayed me one day. Thanks Kelli. My steering pump was leaking bout a pint a day. Last I remember looking under it. . . it was actually running a stream out of it. Pay me now or pay me later. Presently running Twin Falls, ID to Bozeman, MT up and back half dozen times.
