The truck is a 98. 5 4x4. The power steering pump had a leak, as did the steer gear. I replaced the pump, and rebuilt the vacuum pump all was well steering ok and brakes worked as usual. A few days later the valve in the ps pump stuck and i lost power for brakes and steering. I unstuck the valve and did the upgrade on the valve in the pump. A couple weeks later i replaced the steer gear with a pss gear, blead per chip's instructions and it was working fine till today, the valve stuck again and i lost brakes (hard as a rock) but steering worked when the truck was rolling. I got it home and unstuck the valve again,( replaced the valve with one from junk yard. )

Now steering is great but my brakes suck big time. I don't have any bubbles in the ps fluid so i don't think it is an air issue.

How does the booster work? Does it bypass to the steer gear and overflow to the ps pump on the center return, until you step on the brakes, then activate the master cylinder with pressure for assist, while still powering the steergear?

Is there any test for the booster other then replacing it? Could the valve sticking have damaged the booster?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Dirk

check the gear in the vac pump where the power steering is attached. There is a steel gear with a cross cut out, if it moves freely the ears are broke off and you won't have brakes

The vacuum pump is working, it pulls good vacuum and the cad works and also the heater controls are fine. I ordered a booster and will pick up this pm. I just would like to know what kind of pressure i should see coming from the ps pump to the booster. I took off the line that goes to the gear from the booster, and started the truck just for a second, and it shot a 3/8 stream of ps fluid clear x the shop.

It was the booster, put on a new one and all is working fine... . Only 1 issue, my brake peddle comes up slow, it takes about 8 seconds before the brake light goes out... ..... The paper with the boost says slow peddle is caused by a restriction in a return line, but i replaced them both. Any Ideas? Thanks

Man i have rerouted, changed fittings, hose, blead all the brake lines, and it still takes 8 seconds for the brake peddle to come up and turn off the brake lights. The brakes work great now as does the steering. I will adjust up the back brake shoes tomorrow so the peddle only goes down a tad... ... ... ... . Any words of wisdom, what is causing this??
