Like the title (hopefully) says, I would like to know the ID of the PS return lines that run from the PS cooler to back to the PS pump res.

For some reason, I thought that they are 5/8" ID, but Oreillys is claiming 3/8" ID. ANYONE??

ALSO, in the interest of specs for a hydraulic filter head install in the same line, does anyone know the value for RETURN pressure on the low side of the PS pump.

Dodge typicaly used 11/32 for the return hose.the cooler hose on your truck is of course different. The cooler line at the cooler looks to be one size if you measure the tube where it can be measured, but if you slide the hose off you will find it a different size.Sorry but it has been too long since I did that to remember the number

Thanks for that. Oreillys sells 3/8" ID for the return line...I guess that'll be close enough.

Any idea on return line pressure ??

Just a quick but important update here...the power steering RETURN lines (low pressure from the steering box to the cooler and also cooler back to the pump reservoir are most definitely 5/8" ID (15.9mm written directly on the Aeroquip hose after I cleaned them up). The cooler lines are also 5/8" ID. This is some serious hose and I realized that the 1/2" hose and fittings that I was going to use to plumb the PS fluid filter will be too restrictive.

In short, the GOOD news is that the filter set up I am assembling using Donaldson and Fleetguard parts and some brass pipe fittings and valves is going to fit PERFECTLY between the left front wheel well liner and bumper frame, just like the coolant filter that I installed (thanks AH64ID) on the passenger side in the same location behind the bumper. I am even going to be able to reuse the oem preformed return line that runs from the cooler to the reservoir simply by cutting back 3" and moving it so it goes over the frame rail to the output of my new filter head instead of down to the transmission cooler. Also, ATF+4 that I drained out of the PS system was DIRTY after 4 years of use!!!

The BAD news is that I needed to wait to get some 5/8" hose and 5/8" barb x 1/2" mip brass fittings to finish the job...should get it done tomorrow.

Pics and a better description in a new thread after I am done!!!

The filter install is finished. Easy and smooth by all accounts and the filter itself was warm to touch after my short test drive. SUCCESS!!!!

EXCEPT that I managed to trash all the great pix I took and annotated while transferring them from my phone to my computer.:mad:

So you guys will have to wait a bit until I have time to retake the pics. Meantime I have the parts list finished and am working on the writeup.

Well crap. I finally dug the Gates hose out of the box and it is 3/8" and it is too small for the return.

Oh well, guess I'll get some 5/8"
