Are PSC steering boxes with the extra cost, which is almost double??

O'Reilly's has remanufactured boxes for $171. The PSC box is $300+ Will you actually feel a difference between the two? My truck is not 4wd and I don't do any trail riding with it. I pull my enclosed trailer a lot and just generally put a ton of miles on my truck (sitting at 235k right now). I'm very kind to my suspension parts, I can hold alignments for over a year (i. e. I don't hit every hole in the road nor fly over train tracks). Most abuse my truck gets is when I drive on dirt roads or pull my trailer off road (I use it for my mountain bikes, racing, riding, etc. )

My father-in-law (also a member here) has put several "reman" steering boxes from on his '95 2wd only to find that the sector shaft is still loose. Remanufactured is supposed to mean that all parts that can be replaced are & if the housing doesn't at least meet factory specs it cannot be remanufactured, but apparently not at NAPA. When he was here this summer I drove his '95 it didn't seem like the steering was right & sure enough, when I crawled under it & had him run the steering wheel back & forth 1/3 turn, the sector shaft had about 1/8" side-to-side play in it at the pitman arm. NOT GOOD.

A new box from Dodge will run in excess of $300 so I gotta think a new box from PSC or AGR has to be a pretty good deal.

I've just gone through this on my 99 Desert Tank... my buddy was driving my truck and went off the Hwy 3 in Baja on accident and bent the sector shaft really bad.

We nursed it home and swapped it out with a reman box and it was only a little better with a big old price $$$...

I called Carl at PSC Motorsports and they sent out the Exteme Lighten Valved Box and all I can say is "Yeah... Baby. "

The difference is night and day.

I run 37 inch Toyo Muds and the box turns them with literally one finger... . wish I would have done this years ago...

I've tested it for the past 2500 miles in the dirt and its just great..... Oo.

It is a hard choice... .

First you can go down and get a reman steering box from a big auto parts store. Approx 150 dollars cost and lifetime warranty.

Lately we have had bad luck with these cardone PS pumps and every 10k miles they break again or start making noise. Just had a ARI with 3k miles go bad... All this time is worth money. I bought a new box for my truck about 10k miles ago from autozone, lifetime warranty. No problems yet, however, with 35 inch tires i'd like a lower gear box... .

for your app, a rebuilt pump is fine, hopefully you wont get a dud...

That's cheap for a rebuilt box. When I needed a new box in my Jeep, I checked Napa and it was just a bit under the $300s for a PSC box. I'm very happy with PSC, and I'll probably put one on my truck sometimes, as the stocker is leaking and worn.

Ya it's on O'Reilly's website. $171 for a remanuf. steering box for a '95 Dodge Diesel.

That's a little over half what the PSC box costs. I don't run big tires, probably 285/75's are the largest I will run on the truck.

If the Dodge box at the parts store comes with a lifetime warranty, go for it.

If not, then go with PSC

Also, depends on how long you plan to own the truck?

Ya it has a lifetime warranty. It does say limited, got to find out what the fine print is.

I'm going to own the truck for a year or more. It's paid for, gets good fuel milage :) I wish it was a manual and extended cab though...

even though my steering was not sloppy to begin with, changing to a PSC box made the steering even tighter on mine :)

And the good thing is that they don't need a core ;)

Or you can send it off to a place like this

http://westtexasoffroad.homestead.com/hydrosteering.html

so at least it's not just a rebuilt but an upgrade with stronger parts (that's what I recently did with my Jeep box)

:)

Napa is showing $217 for a rebuilt box, $222 for the core  That's the price on teh website, it's more expensive at the stores here because of shipping to AK.

For what it's worth, I've had 2 Napa reman units on a chevy step van in 2 years. Both loose at the center and real tight near the locks.

Very sad.

I'm friends with the manager and he knows this is the last one. Even he , says, they ALL come back. Just drive it 11 months and bring it back.

What a deal. Glad their not hard to change out.

Tis a delima. I could really save a lot of cash going with the reman'ed unit. Which would be a good thing cause I also need ball joints...

I've had three reman pumps and 4 reman steering gears, all covered under their "lifetime warranty". I am going with the PSC pump and gear the nest time I change them.

I did check with the store I got mine from (Murray's) and was told I could bring the core back in for a full refund. That may let you be able to do all the work now and when the gear goes bad again (it will) then upgrade to the PSC. The gear only takes about 15 minutes to change.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. That may be the ticket. I will ask to see if I can bring it back in for a full refund if they keep going out.

I also though about getting a reman'ed then putting the steering stabilizer on it from PSC at a later date.

Do you happen to know what the brand was on your reman'ed gear? Was it A1 Carbone? or something like that... .

It was Cardone. I'm done with them.

I wouldn't mind changing the stuff that much because I do use my trauck a LOT. But the worst part is, when do work, they don't work well. There are parking spots I can't getin because I can't turn my tires.

ive had the AGR quick steer box and pump for 25000 miles now and have no problems at all. it sells at summit racing for $330.
