The other day when my truck was having surgery performed on the noxious gas emission line I got a good chance to look all underneath my truck. I noticed a small leak from the passenger side PTO cover plate at the bottom of the plate. It almost looks like the bolts are a little loose. Can I tighten these bolts and cure the problem or should I pull the plate and put a new gasket on?

Secondly, I noticed a fair amount of oil on the bellhousing of the transmission at the very bottom, but I couldn't tell if this was from a leak or from the blow back tube. I checked the bottle the other day and it was almost empty.

For the pto cover, if tightening the bolts doesn't do it, and aren't using the pto, just use some RTV to seal it up.

Can't say on the other. Could be from blow-by.

There are no gaskets, the factory uses silicone sealer only. The bottom bolt is used as the drain plug for changing the lubricant.

Try tightening them, if that fails, remove the bottom bolt to drain the transmission then remove the PTO plate. Stick a short tube inside the trnasmission and suck some more oil out to keep it from wettting the lower edge. Silicone has a hard time adhering to an oily surface. Then clean it all up with cleaner, apply a layer of silicone to the plate and bolt threads and reinstal it. You might want to consider installing a PTO filter from Genos, they really work. I have a FastCooler on the driver side too. Dont forget to clean the magnet if you pull the cover. If you go the PTO filter route, toos the gaskets that come with it and use silicone, I learned the hard way.

Speaking of PTO's, just what exactly is it for? Can you get hydraulic pumps or something that bolt on there? Just wondering... .

Yes, you can get various pumps and accessory drives that bolt to the PTO. Chelsea and Muncie are two manufacturers.
